نَعَمْyes هَذِهِthis الدَّارُthe abode الَّتيthat أَنْتَyou تَطْلُبُseek
نَعَمْ هَذِهِ الدَّارُ الَّتي أَنْتَ تَطْلُبُ
إِلَىto أَيْنَwhere عَنْهَاaway from it يَالَكَmay yours be الخَيْرُgood fortune تَذْهَبُyou go
إِلَى أَيْنَ عَنْهَا يَالَكَ الخَيْرُ تَذْهَبُ
Yes, this is the abode you seek.
Yes, this is the abode you seek
Where are you heading, away from it—may good fortune be yours?
To where, my dear friend, does your goodness flee?
أَعَنْis it from دَارِthe abode of لَيْلَىLayla بَعْدَafter مَاthat بَانَappeared بَانُهَاits bān trees
أَعَنْ دَارِ لَيْلَى بَعْدَ مَا بَانَ بَانُهَا
وَفَاحَand spread شَذَاthe fragrance of أَنْفَاسِهَاher breaths تَتَحَجَّبُyou veil yourself
وَفَاحَ شَذَا أَنْفَاسِهَا تَتَحَجَّبُ
From Layla’s abode, after its bān trees have appeared,
Is it to Layla's home, now that it stands revealed,
and the fragrance of her breath has spread, do you veil yourself?
And the scent of her breath wafts veiled?
لَقَدْindeed سَمَحَتْwillingly consented رُوحِيmy soul بُقْربِfor nearness to مَزَارِهَاher shrine
لَقَدْ سَمَحَتْ رُوحِي بُقْربِ مَزَارِهَا
بفُرْقَةِto separation from جِسْمٍa body لَمْnot تَزَلْcease فِيهِin it تَرْغَبُit desires
بفُرْقَةِ جِسْمٍ لَمْ تَزَلْ فِيهِ تَرْغَبُ
Indeed, for nearness to her shrine, my soul consented
My soul has allowed me near her tomb,
to part from a body it had never ceased to desire.
Despite my body's separation, which it still desires.
وَهَلْand is it that كَانَتِwere الأَجْسَادُbodies إِلاَّanything but مَطِيَّنَاour mounts
وَهَلْ كَانَتِ الأَجْسَادُ إِلاَّ مَطِيَّنَا
تُقَرِّبُهَاyou bring them close مَعْنىًa meaning لَهَاbelonging to them حِينَwhen تَقْرَبُyou draw near
تُقَرِّبُهَا مَعْنىً لَهَا حِينَ تَقْرَبُ
And were bodies ever anything but our mounts,
Were bodies ever anything but our vehicles?
which you bring close for a meaning they bear whenever you draw near?
Drawing meaning near when they draw near.
نَعَمْyes ذَلِكَthat المَعْنَىthe meaning الَّذِيwhich أَشْرَقَتْshone بِهِthrough it
نَعَمْ ذَلِكَ المَعْنَى الَّذِي أَشْرَقَتْ بِهِ
بُدُورُfull moons سَنَاهَاher radiance بَعْدمَاafter عَنْكَaway from you تَغْرِبُthey set
بُدُورُ سَنَاهَا بَعْدمَا عَنْكَ تَغْرِبُ
Yes, that is the meaning through which there shone
Yes, that meaning which shone through
the full moons of her radiance, after they had set beyond your sight.
The cycles of her years after you were estranged;
وَلاَحتْand appeared وَهَلْand is it that يَوْماًever تَوَارَتْthey hid themselves وَإِنَّمَاand only
وَلاَحتْ وَهَلْ يَوْماً تَوَارَتْ وَإِنَّمَا
بِتَنْزِيهِهَاin her being declared transcendent عَنْbeyond ذَاكَthat طَرْفِيmy gaze يُكَذِّبُdisbelieves
بِتَنْزِيهِهَا عَنْ ذَاكَ طَرْفِي يُكَذِّبُ
And appeared—yet were they ever hidden? Only
It appeared - did it ever disappear? My eyes deny
the claim that she is beyond that does my gaze deny.
That it vanished through her withdrawal from me.
