Whose tents appear at Dhū Ṭalūḥ?
For whose tent waving at the towering peak
The scent of yarrow and wormwood wafted.
Does the basil plant's aroma waft and reek?
دِيَارٌdwellings بِالعَوَاصِمِin al-ʿAwāṣim ذَاتُhaving سَفْحٍa slope
لِسَلْمَىbelonging to Salmā دَائِمِunceasing الدَّمْعِtears السَّفُوحِcopiously flowing
Dwellings in al-ʿAwāṣim, upon a slope,
A land with heights, those sloping bases,
Salmā's, where tears pour ceaselessly.
Belonging to Salma, ever tearfully weak,
تَبَسَّمَsmiled ثَغْرُهَاher mouth واللَّيْلُwhile the night دَاجٍdark
فَنَبَّهَتِso she roused النَّدَامَىthe drinking companions لِلصَّبُوحِfor the morning draught
Her mouth smiled while the night was dark,
Her mouth smiles though the night is murky,
So she roused the drinking companions for the morning draught.
So the sorrows awake for the morn's first streak.
وَكَيْفَand how بَقَاءُthe continuance of لَيْلٍnight مَعْwith نَهَارٍday
ولاَand not سِيماَthe like of لِذِfor one with النَّظَرsight الصَّحِيحِsound
And how can night endure beside day,
How can night remain with the light of day?
Especially for one of sound sight?
Especially with keen sight and vision sleek!

O you of supple stature, restore to my body
O patron of the lithe, for my body prepare
My spirit with your cup—may my soul be your ransom!
With your cup - my soul's life, its essence and pique!
فَإِنَّfor indeed بِهَاin it حَيَاتِيmy life بَعْدَafter مَوْتِيmy death
لِهَذَاfor this reason لُقِّبَتْit was dubbed بِدَمِas the blood of المَسَيحِthe Messiah
For in it lies my life after my death;
For through it my life after death continues on
For this it was called the blood of the Messiah.
Thus titled the blood of Christ the meek.
أَلَسْتَdo you not تَرَىsee الحَمَائِمَthe doves قَدْindeed تَغَنَّتْhave sung
بِلَحْنٍin a melody مُعْجَمِunintelligible in المَعْنىmeaning فَصِيحِeloquent
Do you not see that the doves have sung
See the doves sing songs
In a melody obscure in meaning, yet eloquent?
In odes of eloquent meanings oblique
تُذكِّرُكthey remind you of الصَّبابَةَardent longing والتَّصَابِيand youthful dalliance
وَتنْسَخُand abrogate حُكْمَthe decree of تَوْبَتِكَyour repentance النَّصُوحِsincere
They remind you of ardent longing and youthful dalliance,
Reminding you of youth and companions
And annul the decree of your sincere repentance.
And copying your repentance, genuine and unique.
