لَمَّاwhen انْتَهَتْarrived عَيْنيmy eye إِلىَto أَحْبَابِهَاits beloveds
شَاهَدْتُI beheld صِرْفَpure الرَّاحِwine عَيْنَthe very same as حَبَابِهَاits bubbles
When my eye reached its beloveds,
When my eyes reached their loved ones
I beheld pure wine as one with its bubbles.
I saw the turning away of a loved one's eyes
أَأَرَىshall I see? سِوَىany but لَيْلَىLayla إِذَاwhen حَكَمَdecreed الجَفَاestrangement
مِنْهَاfrom her عَلَيَّagainst me بِبُعْدِهَاwith her remoteness وَحِجَابِهَاand her veil
Would I see any but Layla, when her coldness decrees
Shall I see other than Layla when estrangement rules me
Her remoteness from me and her veil,
With her distance and veil between us
والَكَوْنُand all existence مِنْamong عُشَّاقِهَاher lovers وَيَفُوتُنُيand escapes me
أَدَبٌa courtesy يَرَاهُregards it الحُبِّlove مِنْamong آدَابِهَاher courtesies
While all existence is among her lovers—and should I miss
While the universe of her lovers tempts me
A courtesy that Love counts among her courtesies?
With a grace that love sees as her graces
لاَno وَالَّذيby Him who جَعَلmade الضَّنَاwasting sickness وَالحُزْنَand sorrow
جِلْبَابِيmy robe بِهَاon her account وَالحُسْنَand beauty مِنْpart of جِلْبَابِهَاher robe
No, by Him who made wasting sickness and sorrow
No, by Him who made sadness and longing
My robe on her account, and beauty part of her robe.
My garb through her, and beauty my garb
وَنَعِمْتُand I found bliss مِنْfrom أَكْوَانِهَاher worlds وَرَأَىand saw السِّوىotherness
غَيْريِsomeone other than me فَأَصْبَحَso became قَلْبُهُhis heart يُكْوَىis seared بِهَاby her
And I found bliss in her worlds; otherness was seen
I enjoyed her charms while others saw
By someone else, whose heart was then seared by her.
So their hearts were seared for her
وَلَقَدْand indeed طَرَقْتُI visited by night الحَيَّthe encampment بَيْنَamong خِيَامِهِits tents
فَكَأَنَّنِيso it was as though I لِلسُّقْمِbecause of sickness مِنْone of أَطْنَابِهَاtheir tent ropes
And indeed I visited the encampment by night, among its tents,
I walked the abode amidst its tents
As though, through sickness, I were one of their tent ropes.
As if sickness itself were its drapes for me
وَقَرأْتand I read هَاتِيكَthose البِيُوتَdwellings تَصَفُّحاًscrutinizing
فَكَأَنَّنِيso it was as though I المَسْئُولُthe one answerable عَنْfor إِعْرَابِهَاtheir grammatical parsing
And I read those dwellings, scrutinizing them,
I read these verses closely
As though I were answerable for their grammatical parsing.
As if I were asked to parse their grammar
حَتَّىuntil إِذَاwhen جَذَبَdrew aside الصَّبَاحُmorning لِثَامَهُhis veil
وَرَمَتْand cast off مَلِيَحةُthe fair maiden of شَمْسِهِhis sun بَنَقِابِهَاwith her face veil
Until, when morning drew aside his veil
Until dawn drew its veil
And his lovely sun cast off her face veil,
And the beautiful sun cast off her veil
رَأَتْsaw الدُّجَيْنَةُthe darkness أَنَّنيthat I مِنْof بَعْضِهَاa part of her
فَذَهَبْتُso I went away بِالأَنْوَارِwith the lights عِنْدَat ذِهَابِهَاher departure
The darkness saw that I was a part of her,
The gloom saw I was one of it
So I carried off the lights as she departed.
So I left with the rays at its leaving
وَشَهِدْتُand I beheld لَيْلَىLayla لاَnot يَرَاهَاsees her غَيْرُهَاanyone other than her
وَجَمَالُهَاand her beauty قَدْalready شَفَّshone مِنْthrough جِلْبَابِهَاher robe
And I beheld Layla, whom only she herself sees,
I witnessed Layla, seen by no other
And her beauty shone through her robe.
Her beauty had shed its veil
وَطَلَبْتُهَاand I sought her فَوَجَدْتُand so I found أَسْبَابَthe means to المُنَىhopes
مَوْصُولَةًjoined بالْيَأْسِto despair مَنْof أَسْبَابِهَاthe means of reaching her
And I sought her, and found the means of fulfilling hopes
I sought her but found only the means of death
Bound to despair of the means of reaching her,
Linked by despair to its causes
إلاَّexcept لِمَنْfor whoever أَعْطَىgave الصَّبَابَةَardent longing حَقَّهَاits due
وَأَتَىand came to بيوُتَthe houses of الحَيِّthe encampment مِنْthrough أَبْوَابِهَاtheir doors
Except for one who gave ardent longing its due,
Except for those who gave youth its due
And entered the encampment's houses through their doors,
And approached the abode through its doors
وَوَفَىand fulfilled بِعَهْدِthe covenant of رَسُولِهَاher messenger فيin أَمْرِهِhis command
عَنْهَاon her behalf فَقَامَand so stood مَقَامَهُin his place فيat بَابِهَاher door
And fulfilled her messenger's covenant in what he commanded
And kept faith with the pact of its messenger
On her behalf, and so took his place at her door.
In the matter, standing in the door in place
