At the like of this, rapture stirs you.
With the like of this, ecstasy shakes you

For the encampment's tents have been thrown open,
So the living one, his dwelling was made
And the veils have fallen away from its beauty.
And his beauty, the veils moved away from him
وَكُلُّand every صَبٍّlovesick lover صَبَاyearned لِسَاكِنِهِfor its dweller

And every lovesick soul who longs for its dweller
And every youth who grew up in its abode
Prostrates himself before him in longing and draws near.
Bows down longing for it and moves nearer

Make your mounts kneel beside their dwelling,
Unload your burdens at their dwellings
Lest the saddles and thoroughbred camels trample you.
Lest the saddlebags and luggage burden you

And make your way upon your eyelid, humbly; perhaps
And spread humbly on the eyelid, hopefully
Humility and courtesy will intercede for you.
Meekness and propriety will intercede for you
وَارْجِand hope for قِرَاهُمْtheir hospitality إِذَاwhen نَزَلْتَyou lodge بِهِمْwith them

And hope for their hospitality when you lodge with them,
Ask to visit their homes when you descend among them
For you are their guest, and they are Arabs.
For you are their guest and they are bedouins
وَاسْجُدْand prostrate yourself لَهُمْbefore them وَاْقَتَرِبْand draw near فَعَاشِقُهُمْfor their lover

And prostrate yourself before them and draw near, for their lover
And bow to them and draw near, for their lovers
Prostrates himself before them in longing and draws near.
Bow down longing for them and move nearer

I have for you, O dear folk of Kazimah,
For you O people of the silent Kadhimah
Secrets of ecstasy, whose telling is a marvel.
I have secrets of passion, its narration is wondrous
أَرَىI see بِكُمthrough you خَاطِريmy mind يُلاحِظُنيِgazes at me
مِنْfrom أَيْنَwhere هَذَاthis الإِخَاءُbrotherhood وَالنَّسَبُand kinship
Through you, I see my mind gazing at me.
I see my thoughts observing me
Whence this brotherhood and kinship?
Whence this brotherhood and lineage?
وَإنْand if تَشَوَّقْتَكُمْI yearn for you بَعَثْتُI send لَكُمْto you
كُتْبَletters of غَرَامِيmy passion وَمِنْكُمُand from you الكُتُبُthe letters
And if I yearn for you, I send you
And if you longed for them, I sent to you
Letters of my passion—and from you come the letters.
My books of passion and from you the books
وَأَشْرَبُand I drink الرَّاحthe wine حِينَwhen أَشْرَبُهَاI drink it
صِرْفاًundiluted وَأَصْحُوand I grow sober بِهَاthrough it فَمَاso what السَّبَبُthe reason
And when I drink the wine, I drink it
And I drink the wine when I drink it
Undiluted, and I grow sober through it—what is the reason?
Pure and awake with it, so what is the cause?
خَمْرَتُهَاits wine مِنْfrom دَميmy blood وَعَاصِرُهَاand its presser

Its wine is from my blood, and the one who presses it
Its wine is of my blood, and its presser
Is my own self, and from my tears come its bubbles.
Is my essence, and its raisins are of my tears
إنْif كُنْتُI am أَصْحُوI grow sober بِشُرْبِهَاby drinking it فَلَقَدْthen indeed
عَرْبَدَcaroused قَوْمُsome people بِهَاon it وَمَاand not شَرِبُواthey drank
If I grow sober by drinking it, then indeed
If I awake by drinking it, the people indeed
Some have caroused on it without drinking.
Became drunk with it though they did not drink
هِيَit النَّعِيمُthe bliss المُقِيمُabiding فيin خَلَدِيmy heart
وَإِنْand even though غَدَتْit has become فيin الكُؤوُسِthe cups تَلْتَهِبُit blazes
It is the abiding bliss within my heart,
It is the lasting bliss in my eternity
Even though it has come to blaze within the cups.
And if it burns in cups, it flames
فَغَنِّso sing ليto me إِنْif سَقَيْتَyou give drink يَاO أَمَليmy hope
بِاسْمِin the name of التَّيher who بيwith me عَليَّfrom me تَحْتَجِبُveils herself
So sing to me, if you pour, O my hope,
So sing to me if you quenched my hopes
In the name of her who veils herself from me with my own self.
In the name of her who hides from me
