عُيونَeyes of الحَيَاlife-giving rain جُوْدِيbe generous لِتُرْبَةِto the soil of يَثْربِYathrib
عُيونَ الحَيَا جُوْدِي لِتُرْبَةِ يَثْربِ
بدَمْعٍwith tears هَتُونٍfreely flowing وَدْقَهُits rain مُتَصَوِّبِpouring down
بدَمْعٍ هَتُونٍ وَدْقَهُ مُتَصَوِّبِ
O eyes of rain, be generous to Yathrib's soil
My life's eyes shed tender tears on Yathrib's soil
with streaming tears whose rain pours down.
With yearning and sorrow for that blessed place
وَعُودِيand return بِطِيبٍwith fragrance مِنْfrom سَلاَمِيَmy greeting طِيبُهُits perfume
وَعُودِي بِطِيبٍ مِنْ سَلاَمِيَ طِيبُهُ
نَسِيمُthe breeze of الصِّبَاthe east wind النَّجْدِيِّof Najd يَاO خَيْرَbest of طَيِّبِa pure one
نَسِيمُ الصِّبَا النَّجْدِيِّ يَا خَيْرَ طَيِّبِ
And return with fragrance from my greeting, whose perfume
And I return with a greeting of sweet perfume
is the east wind of Najd, O best of the pure.
Borne on the Najdi breeze, O best of sweet scents
بِلاَدٌa land بِهَاin it لِلْوَحْيِfor revelation مَرْبَاًa place of nurture وَمَرْبَعٌand a springtime dwelling
بِلاَدٌ بِهَا لِلْوَحْيِ مَرْبَاً وَمَرْبَعٌ
وَمَنْتَجَعُand a place to seek الغُفْرَانِforgiveness عَنْfor كُلِّevery مُذْنِبِsinner
وَمَنْتَجَعُ الغُفْرَانِ عَنْ كُلِّ مُذْنِبِ
A land where revelation has a place of nurture and a springtime home,
A land where revelation found refuge and home
and a haven of forgiveness for every sinner;
And where forgiveness is granted for every sinner's wrong
وَحَيْثُand where الكَمِالُperfection الطَّلْقُunbounded والمَرْكَزand the center الذَّيwhich
وَحَيْثُ الكَمِالُ الطَّلْقُ والمَرْكَز الذَّي
إِليْهِto it انْتَهَىculminated دَوْرُthe circuit of المُحيِطِthe encompassing sphere المُكَوْكَبِstar-studded
إِليْهِ انْتَهَى دَوْرُ المُحيِطِ المُكَوْكَبِ
and where lie unbounded perfection and the center
The abode of perfection and clear revelation
to which the star-studded sphere's circuit ultimately leads.
Where the sphere of heaven ended its destined course
أَفَاضَتُهُpoured him forth أَنْوِارُthe lights of الغُيُوبِunseen realms عَلىupon الوَرَىcreation
أَفَاضَتُهُ أَنْوِارُ الغُيُوبِ عَلى الوَرَى
إفَاضَةَan outpouring of وَهْبٍa gift خَارِجٍَoutside عنْof تَكَسُّبِearning
إفَاضَةَ وَهْبٍ خَارِجٍَ عنْ تَكَسُّبِ
The lights of unseen realms poured him forth upon creation,
Its hidden lights shone upon the world
an outpouring of bounty beyond all earning.
An overflowing grace beyond all earning
فَأَخْبَرَso he told عَمَاof what غَابَwas hidden بِالشَّاهِدِthrough the manifest witness الذَّيwhich
فَأَخْبَرَ عَمَا غَابَ بِالشَّاهِدِ الذَّي
يُبَرْهِنُgives proof بِالإِعْجَازِthrough miraculous power فِيin كُلِّevery مَطْلَبِinquiry
يُبَرْهِنُ بِالإِعْجَازِ فِي كُلِّ مَطْلَبِ
So he told of what was hidden through the manifest witness
Informing of all that was absent through proofs
that gives miraculous proof in every inquiry.
That demonstrated miracles for every demand
إذَاwhen نَظَرَتْgaze عَيْناthe two eyes of بَصِيرَتِهِhis insight إلىَtoward
إذَا نَظَرَتْ عَيْنا بَصِيرَتِهِ إلىَ
حَقِيَقتِهِhis reality المُثْلَىsupreme فأَحْسِنْthen how fair! وَأَطْيِبِand how pure!
حَقِيَقتِهِ المُثْلَى فأَحْسِنْ وَأَطْيِبِ
When the two eyes of his insight gaze upon
Whenever his seeing eyes looked upon
his supreme reality—how fair and how pure!
The most beautiful reality, excel and purify
يَرَىhe sees بَرْزَخَthe isthmus between البَحْرَينِthe two seas كَوْناًa being مُكَوَّناًbrought into being
يَرَى بَرْزَخَ البَحْرَينِ كَوْناً مُكَوَّناً
وَمَطْلَعَهُand its rising-place فِيwithin حَدِّهِits limit المُتَرَتِّبِduly ordered
وَمَطْلَعَهُ فِي حَدِّهِ المُتَرَتِّبِ
He sees the isthmus between the two seas as a created being,
He saw the isthmus between two seas, a made universe
and its rising-place within its ordered limit.
With its origin fixed in a clear sequence
فَيَأْخُذُso he takes مِنْfrom هَذَاthis لِهَذَاfor this بِحَقِّهِaccording to its due
فَيَأْخُذُ مِنْ هَذَا لِهَذَا بِحَقِّهِ
عَلَىaccording to نِسْبَةٍa relationship مَحْفُوظَةِpreserved الأُمِّthe mother وَالأَبِand the father
عَلَى نِسْبَةٍ مَحْفُوظَةِ الأُمِّ وَالأَبِ
So he takes from this for that, according to its due,
Taking from this for that by its rightful due
in a relation that preserves both mother and father.
In a proportion guarded, from common source and unique descent
عَلَىat يَدِّthe hand of مَعْنَاهُhis inner meaning يَمُرُّpasses وُجُوبُهُhis necessity
عَلَى يَدِّ مَعْنَاهُ يَمُرُّ وُجُوبُهُ
لإِمْكَانِهِto his contingency مَرَّlike the passing of السَّحَابِthe clouds المُصَوِّبِpouring rain
لإِمْكَانِهِ مَرَّ السَّحَابِ المُصَوِّبِ
Through the agency of his inner meaning, his necessity passes
Passing by the hand of its meaning, its obligation
to his contingency, like the passing of rain-pouring clouds.
Like clouds driven for its possibility
فَيَقْبَلُso receives مِنْهُfrom him قَابِلٌa recipient حُكْمُthe influence of فَاعِلٍan agent
فَيَقْبَلُ مِنْهُ قَابِلٌ حُكْمُ فَاعِلٍ
بِمَضْمُونِthrough the substance of مِيَراثِthe inheritance of الكَمَالِperfection المُهَذَّبِrefined
بِمَضْمُونِ مِيَراثِ الكَمَالِ المُهَذَّبِ
So a recipient receives from him an agent's influence,
So a recipient accepts the decree of the Doer
by virtue of the legacy of refined perfection.
By the content of the inheritance of perfected grace
وَلَمْand not يَكُwas he فِيin هذَاthis التَّوُسُطِmediation مُثْبِتاًasserting
وَلَمْ يَكُ فِي هذَا التَّوُسُطِ مُثْبِتاً
عَلَىover النَّاسِthe people حَقّاًa right أَوْor تَمَيُّزَdistinction of rank مَنْصِبِrank
عَلَى النَّاسِ حَقّاً أَوْ تَمَيُّزَ مَنْصِبِ
And through this mediation he did not assert
Without establishing through this mediation
any right over people or distinction of rank.
Any right over people, or distinguishing of positions
وُمَاand not ذَاكَthat أَنْbecause لَيْسَthere is no حَوْلٌmight وَقُوَّةٌand strength
وُمَا ذَاكَ أَنْ لَيْسَ حَوْلٌ وَقُوَّةٌ
بِغَيْرِapart from الجَوَادِthe Generous One المُطْلَقِunbounded in الجُودِgenerosity فَاعْجَبِso marvel!
بِغَيْرِ الجَوَادِ المُطْلَقِ الجُودِ فَاعْجَبِ
And that is not because there is no might or strength
That is because there is no might nor power
apart from the Generous One of boundless bounty—so marvel!
But by the Absolute Generous Bestower
وَلَكِنْand yet يَرَىhe sees إِلاَّonly أَنَّthat نُكْتَهَthe subtle point of قَلْبِهِhis heart
وَلَكِنْ يَرَى إِلاَّ أَنَّ نُكْتَهَ قَلْبِهِ
أُزِيلَwas removed بِهَاthrough it دَاعِيthe prompting of الهَوَىdesire وَالتَّحَوُّبِand sinning
أُزِيلَ بِهَا دَاعِي الهَوَى وَالتَّحَوُّبِ
Yet he sees only that his heart's subtle point
Rather, he sees that the subtlety of his heart
has dispelled the prompting of desire and sin.
Had removed the summons of passions and desirous love
فَهَذَاso this لَهُfor him مَعْنَىthe meaning of المَقَامِthe station مُغَيَّبٌhidden
فَهَذَا لَهُ مَعْنَى المَقَامِ مُغَيَّبٌ
وَلَمْand not يَكُwere عَنْهَاfrom it أَهْلُهُits people بِمُغَيَّبِkept away
وَلَمْ يَكُ عَنْهَا أَهْلُهُ بِمُغَيَّبِ
Thus, for him, this station's meaning lies hidden,
So the meaning of this station was hidden from him
yet its adepts are not kept away from it.
And its people were not absent from it, unseen
إِذَاwhen صُفَّتِare arrayed الأَقْدَامُthe feet مِنَّاof us وَأَمَّنَاand he leads us
إِذَا صُفَّتِ الأَقْدَامُ مِنَّا وَأَمَّنَا
صَلاَةَa prayer of شُهُودٍwitnessing لاَnot صَلاَةَa prayer of تَحَجُّبِveiling
صَلاَةَ شُهُودٍ لاَ صَلاَةَ تَحَجُّبِ
When our feet are set in rows and he leads us
When our feet stand in ranks behind him
in a prayer of witnessing, not a prayer of veiling,
In a prayer of witnessing, not of veiling
مَضَىhe proceeds لَمْnot يُعَقِّبْturns back دَانِياًdrawing near مِنْto شُهُودِهِhis witnessing
مَضَى لَمْ يُعَقِّبْ دَانِياً مِنْ شُهُودِهِ
بِنَاwith us وَمَضَيْنَاand we proceed خَلْفَهُbehind him لَمْnot نُعَقِّبِwe turn back
بِنَا وَمَضَيْنَا خَلْفَهُ لَمْ نُعَقِّبِ
he proceeds without turning back, drawing near to his witnessing,
He passed and none followed of his witnesses
taking us with him; we follow behind him without turning back.
We passed after him, we did not follow
أُولئكَthose وُرَّاثُheirs of النَّبِيِّthe Prophet شَهَادَةًin the seen
أُولئكَ وُرَّاثُ النَّبِيِّ شَهَادَةً
وَغَيْباًand the unseen وَلَيْسَand is not البَّرُthe righteous one مِثْلَlike المُقَرَّبِthe one brought near
وَغَيْباً وَلَيْسَ البَّرُ مِثْلَ المُقَرَّبِ
Those are the Prophet's heirs in the seen
They are the Prophet's heirs, in both witnessing and the unseen
and the unseen; the righteous are not like those brought near.
And nearness is not like the drawn near
وَتِلْكَand that سَبِيلٌa path قَدْindeed دَعَاhe called بِبَصِيرَةٍwith insight
وَتِلْكَ سَبِيلٌ قَدْ دَعَا بِبَصِيرَةٍ
لَهَاto it ودَعَوْنَاand we have called كُلَّevery شَرْقٍeast وَمَغْرِبِand west
لَهَا ودَعَوْنَا كُلَّ شَرْقٍ وَمَغْرِبِ
And that is a path; with insight he has called
This is a path called to with insight
to it, and we have called all the East and West.
To it we called all east and west
فَذَلِكَthat, then دَاعِيa caller to اللهِGod بِالمَنْهَجِby the method الَّذيwhich
فَذَلِكَ دَاعِي اللهِ بِالمَنْهَجِ الَّذي
بِهِthrough it صُورَةُthe form of التَّكْمِيلِperfecting فِيin كُلِّevery مَذْهَبِpath
بِهِ صُورَةُ التَّكْمِيلِ فِي كُلِّ مَذْهَبِ
Such is the one who calls to God by the method
That, then, is the caller to God by the approach
through which perfecting takes form in every path:
In which the image of perfection appears in every creed
شَرِيعَةُa sacred law of حَقٍّtruth حَقُّthe truth of كُلِّevery شَرِيعَةٍsacred law
شَرِيعَةُ حَقٍّ حَقُّ كُلِّ شَرِيعَةٍ
مَقامُa station of خُصُوصٍparticularity عَنْfrom عُمُومٍuniversality مُرَتَّبِordered
مَقامُ خُصُوصٍ عَنْ عُمُومٍ مُرَتَّبِ
a sacred law of truth, the truth of every sacred law,
A law of truth, the truth of every law
a station of particularity, ordered from universality,
The station of specificity beyond general order
مُشَاراًpointed إليْهِto it صُورَةًin form مِنْfrom جِهَاتِهَاits directions
مُشَاراً إليْهِ صُورَةً مِنْ جِهَاتِهَا
جَميعاًall of them وَمَعْنىًand in meaning مِنْfrom حَقَائِقِrealities غُيَّبِunseen
جَميعاً وَمَعْنىً مِنْ حَقَائِقِ غُيَّبِ
pointed to in form from its directions—
Referring by its aspects to it
all of them—and in meaning from unseen realities.
And by meanings from the realities of the hidden
