نَسِيَمَO breeze الصَّبَاthe east wind أَذْكَرْتَنِيyou reminded me العَهْدَthe old days بِالوَادِيin the valley
وَهَيَّجْتَand you stirred أَشْوَاقاًlongings شَقَقْنَthey tore apart فُؤَادِيmy heart
O breeze of the east, you have reminded me of the old days in the valley,
The breeze of the dawn reminded me of the covenant in the valley,
and roused longings that tore my heart apart.
And stirred up passions that cracked my heart open.
فَإِنْfor if كُنْتَyou are تُحْيِيrevive مَيِّتَone dead from الهَجْرِseparation والجَوَىand love's anguish
بِقَتْلِthrough the slaying الهَوَىpassionate love أَحْييَيْتَنِيyou revived me بِمُرَادِيas I wish
For if you revive one dead of separation and love's anguish,
So if you can revive the dead of estrangement and love's agony,
through love's slaying you have revived me as I wish.
By slaying desire, you have revived me to my wish.
فَإِنَّيَfor indeed I مُذْsince فَارَقْتُI parted from أَحْبَابَthe beloved ones of مُهْجَتِيmy soul
وعُوضْتُand I was compensated مِنْfor قُرْبٍnearness لَهُمْto them بِبُعَادِwith distance
For ever since I parted from those dear to my soul,
For since I left the loved ones of my passion,
and was given distance in place of nearness to them,
And was distanced from their nearness by remoteness,
جُفُونِيmy eyelids جَفَتْhave shunned نَوْمَthe sleep of الدُّجَىthe night's darkness لِمَضاجِعِيfor my beds
وَصِرْتُand I became جَلِيساُa companion للسُّهَاto Suha, the star بِسُهَادِيthrough my sleeplessness
my eyelids have shunned the night's sleep upon my beds,
My eyelids lost the sleep of nightfall upon my bed,
and through my sleeplessness I have become Suha's companion.
And I became a companion to wakefulness on my pillow.
فَيَاso, O ذَلِكَyou there الدَّانِيthe one drawing near إلىto ذَلِكَthat الحِمَىsanctuary
إِذَاwhen ما(emphatic particle) أَنَخْتَyou make kneel العِيسَthe pale camels فيin ذَلِكَthat الوَادِيvalley
So, O you drawing near that sanctuary,
So O you who pastures to that love,
when you make the pale camels kneel in that valley,
When you anchor the flock in that valley,
فَنَادِthen call out بِهِin it السُّكَانَthe dwellers أَسْكَنْتُمُyou have lodged الحَشَاthe heart
وَقُودَfuel لَظىًa blaze فَالجَمْرُso the embers صَارَhave become مِهَادِيmy bed
then call out to the dwellers there: “You have lodged within my heart
Call upon its dwellers: "You have settled the arid plain,
fuel for a blaze, so the embers have become my bed.
And kindled raging fires, so the embers have become my bed!"
فَلَمْso … not أَسْتَطِعْI was able فيin اللَّيْلِthe night مَيْلاًa turning لِمَضْجَعِيtoward my bed
أَأَهْجَعُshall I sleep? والنِّيرَانُwhile the fires حَشْوُthe stuffing of وِسَادِيmy pillow
So I could not turn toward my bed at night;
I could not in the night incline to my couch,
can I sleep when fires are my pillow's stuffing?”
Should I sleep while the fires occupy my pillow?
رَعَىmay … preserve اللهُGod أَيَّاماًdays بِمُنْعَرِجِat the bend of اللَّوَىal-Liwa
وَلَيْلاًand a night نَفَىbanished فِيهِin it الوِصَالُunion رُقَادِيmy sleep
May God preserve those days at the bend of al-Liwa,
May God tend days on the incline of fervent love,
and a night when union banished my sleep.
And a night in which union banishes my slumber.
