يَاO عَرَبَArabs الحَيِّthe encampment عُذَّلِيmy reproachers عَدَدُa multitude
أَيْنَwhere الرِّجَالُthe men وَالعُدَدُand the equipment
O Arabs of the encampment, my reproachers are many.
O Arabs alive, my number has dwindled,
Alas! Where are the men and the arms?
Alas! Where are the men and the numbers?
مَاnothing صَحَّproved sound فِيin حُبِّهِloving him سِوىَexcept سَقَمِيmy sickness
بِكُمْfor you وَمَاتَand died السُّلُوforgetting love والجَلدُand fortitude
Nothing in loving him is sound except my sickness
None were true in love except my own sickness,
For you; solace and fortitude have died.
With you, and the firmness and patience died.
عَهْدِيmy recollection وَجِيدُand the neck الكَثيِبِof the dune طَوَّقَهُhe encircled it
مِنْكُمْfrom you بِطَوْقٍwith a collar كَالعِقْدِlike a necklace يَنْتَضِدُis strung in order
I recall the dune's neck, encircled
My pact and the hill of Al-Kathib encircled,
With a collar from you, strung like a necklace.
By a circlet from you closely studded.
يَزْدَادُgrows مِنْfrom مَاءِthe water ورْدِهِof his roses عَطَشاًin thirst
لحِسُنِهِfor his beauty كُلٌّevery وَارِدٍone coming to water يَرِدُcomes to drink
His rose-water increases the thirst
From the water of its roses thirst increases,
For his beauty in everyone who comes to drink.
For its beauty every comer again comes.
مِنْfrom كُلِّevery رَامِيarcher العُيُونِthe eyes مَعْرَكَةٌa battle
مَعْwith وَجْنَتَيْهِhis two cheeks وَصُدْغُهُand his sidelock الزَّرَدُthe chain mail
From every archer of glances comes a battle
From each caster of glances a battle,
With his cheeks; his sidelock is the chain mail.
With its cheeks and chin of chrysolite.
