بَرْقُlightning الحِمَىof the sanctuary أَنْتَyou الَّذِيthe one who
أَذْكَيْتَyou kindled عَنْبَرَهُits ambergris الشَّذِيfragrant
Lightning of the sanctuary, you are the one
You are the lightning of fever that
who kindled its fragrant ambergris.
Ignited its ambergris fragrance
وَأَخَذْتَand you took فِيin شِبْهِlikeness الُّغُورِthe mouths (likely الثغور)
الغُرِّgleaming white أَحْسنَthe finest مَأْخَذِmanner
And you took on the likeness of the [mouths],
And penetrated the semblance of cheeks
gleaming white, in the fairest way.
Taking the fairest course
مَنْwho لِيfor me بِنُوقِwith the she-camels العَامِرِيَّةِof al-ʿĀmiriyya
لَوْif only بِخَدِّيwith my cheek تَحْتَذِيthey would be shod
Who will bring me al-ʿĀmiriyya’s she-camels?
If only I had the cheeks of a gazelle
If only my cheek could serve as their sandal!
That your kisses graze
يَاO سَهْمَarrow مُقْلِتَهَاof her eye إِلَىto

O arrow of her eye, to
O arrow directed straight

Who will rescue me? No, I was mistaken:
Who will rescue me, nay I was wrong
and from you I seek my rescuer.
It is you I seek for my rescue
أَبَداًforever بِوِسُوَاسٍwith whispering عَلَيْكَagainst you
مِنَfrom العَذُولِthe reproacher تَعَوُّذِيmy seeking refuge
Forever, amid whispers against you,
Never with any misgiving about you
I seek refuge from the reproacher.
Take refuge in turning away from me
