    Is it not time for you to quench the little heart of one enslaved by love?

    His eye's inner corners overflow, yet he thirsts.

    وَقَلْبُ الهَوى مَنْ كَانَ قَلْبٌ مُرَزَّأُ

    An eye struck him, sheathing the blade of his separation;

    And love's heart, whoever bears it, is a heart stricken by loss.

    وَكَتْمُ الهَوَى لِلقَلْبِ أَنْكَى وَأَنْكَأُ

    I love a beloved whom, in awe, I do not name;

    And concealing love is more hurtful, more wounding to the heart.

    I fear for him from my own passion; how, then, could I not

    be jealous over him of anyone else? And I am blameless.

    I spend the night, for his sake, enduring the heat within my ribs,

    And between my eyelids flows a stream of tears that will not cease.

    I see him with my heart each day and night,

    Even though I am driven from the watering place of union.

    A letter came to me from him; I gave it its due:

    So here I am, weeping as much as I can and reading.

    Love of him came to me, filling my hearing and my sight,

    And my heart; I have no refuge or escape from it.

    Rescue me with a single day of meeting you,

    For one day of meeting you would suffice me.

    I delude myself with union and favor from you—

    And who can grant it to me—that untroubled bliss?
