O countenance of the joy-bringing moon,

and O enchantment of the sorrowful, lovesick one,

by the pledges of love between us,

when you pass through Jayrut, turn aside to me.

The violet of your temple-locks has appeared to me,

and brought me glad tidings of what I hope for.

    For 'violet' means,

as I have learned, 'I come in person.'

For I have spent many a night folding my hand

over my liver, from a searing anguish.

    وَرِيقُكَ لي بِالكُؤُوسِ امْزِجِ

    So do not mingle my tears with my blood;

and mix your saliva for me in the cups.
