with a breath of Najd’s fragrance wafting about you.

فَضَاعَso wafted لَكُمْto you مِنْهُfrom it شَذَىthe scent of مَسْحَبِthe trailing hem of البُرْدِthe cloak
I think you lodged in the encampment of Layla’s protected grounds,
so the scent of the cloak’s trailing hem wafted from it to you.

and convey my greetings to the dwellers by the solitary mountain?
عُرَيْبٌa little band of Arabs لَهُمْfor them عِنْدِيwith me رِعَايَةُkeeping of عَهْدِهِمْtheir pledge
وَمَاand there is no عِنْدَهُمْwith them لِيfor me نَقْضُbreaking of عَهْدٍa pledge وَلاَnor عَقْدِbinding
A little band of Arabs—their pledge I keep,
yet they neither break a pledge with me nor make one.
إِذَاwhen زَمْزَمَhums الحَادِيthe camel-driver بِأَلْحَانِwith melodies of حُبِّهِمْlove for them

When the camel-driver hums melodies of love for them,
a caravan of tears races him along my cheek.
صًَبَغْتُI dyed بِمُحْمَرٍwith something red مِنَof الدَّمْعِtears بَعْدَهُمْafter their departure
مِنَof الرَّمْلِthe sand مُبْيَضاًa white expanse لأَرْعَىso I may keep لَهْمْfor them عَهْدِيmy pledge
After their departure, with reddened tears I dyed
a white stretch of sand, to keep my pledge to them.
