مَنَعَتْهَاprevented her الصِّفَاتُthe attributes والأَسْمَاءُand the names
أَنْto تُرَىbe seen دُونَwithout بُرْقُعٍa face veil أَسْمَاءُAsmāʾ
The attributes and names have kept her—
Asmāʾ—from being seen without a veil.
قَدْindeed ضَلَلْنَاwe lost our way بِشَعْرِهَاin her hair وَهْوَwhile it منْهَاof her
وَهَدَتْنَاand guided us بِهَاthrough her لَهَاto her الأضْوَاءُthe lights
We have lost our way in her hair, though it is of her,
And through her the lights have guided us to her.
كَيْفَhow بتْنَاwe spent the night مِنَfrom الظَّمَأthirst نَتَشَاكَىwe complain to one another
يَاO لِقَوْمِيfor my people وَفىand in الرِّحَالِthe baggage المَاءُthe water
How did we spend the night complaining of thirst,
O my people, with water in the baggage?
كَمْhow often بَكَيْنَاwe wept حُزْنَاًin sorrow بمَنْfor one لَوْif عَرَفْنَاwe had known
كَانَwould have been مِنْfrom شِدَّةِthe intensity of السُّرُورِjoy البُكَاءُweeping
How often we wept in sorrow for one—had we known,
Our weeping would have sprung from overwhelming joy.
نحْنُwe قَوْمٌa people مِتْنَاwe died وّذَلِكَand that شَرطٌa condition
فِيin هَوَاهَاlove for her فَلْيَيْئَسِso let them despair الأحْيَاءُthe living
We are a people who have died—and that is a condition
Of loving her; so let the living despair.
وَأَقَامَتْand she settled نُفوسَنَاour souls فِيin حِمَاهَاher sanctuary
لاَnot بِنَاthrough us بَلْbut rather بِهَاthrough her لِيَصْفُوso that it may be pure الصَّفَاءُpurity
And she has settled our souls in her sanctuary,
Not through us but through her, that purity may be pure.
فَالمُلَبِّيso the answerer إِذَاwhen دَعَتْshe calls هِيshe مِنْاfrom us
وَمُحِيبُونَهَاand those answering her بِهَاthrough her الأَصْدَاءُthe echoes
So when she calls, she herself answers from within us,
And those answering her are, through her, echoes.
يَاO أَبَاfather of الخَيْرِgoodness قُمْrise لَكَfor you الخَيْرُgoodness فَاطْرِبْso delight
مَسْمَعَthe ear of الفَقْرِpoverty مِنْكَfrom you ذَاكَthat الغِنَاءُthe song
O Abū al-Khayr, rise—may goodness be yours—and delight
Poverty's ear with that song of yours.
لاَdo not تَفُتْmiss كَاسَكَyour cup التَّيwhich مِنْfrom لَمَاهَاher lips' dark hue
هِيit فِيهَاfor it تَنَافَسَvied النُّدَمَاءُthe drinking companions
Do not pass up your cup, which comes from her dusky lips;
It is for this that the drinking companions vied.
لَمْdid not أَقُلْI say قَدْindeed عَدَتْكَpassed you by كَأْسُكَyour cup لَكِنْbut
رُبَّمَاperhaps طَوَّحَتْsent reeling بِكَwith you الصَّهْبَاءُthe tawny wine
I did not say your cup had passed you by, but
Perhaps the tawny wine has sent you reeling.
إنَّماonly يَشْرَبُdrinks التيthat which تَسْلُبُsteals العَقْلَthe mind
نَدَامَىdrinking companions هُمُthey لَهَاfor her أَكْفَاءُequals
The wine that steals the mind is drunk only
By drinking companions who are her equals.
أَسْكَروُهَاthey intoxicated her بِهِمْwith themselves كَمَاjust as أَسْكَرَتْهُمْshe intoxicated them
فِيat ابْتِدَاهُمْtheir beginning بِهَاwith her فَتَمَّso was completed الوَفَاءُfidelity
They made her drunk on themselves, as she made them drunk
When they first began with her; thus was fidelity fulfilled.
فَجَزَاءُso recompense مِنْهَاfrom her وَمِنْهُمْand from them وِفَاقٌaccord
وَand وِفَاقٌaccord مِنْهَاfrom her وَمِنْهُمْand from them جَزَاءُrecompense
So recompense from her and from them is accord,
And accord from her and from them is recompense.
قَدْindeed تَسَمَّتْshe named herself بِهِمْby them وَليسُواand they are not سِوَاهُاother than her
فَالمُسَمَّىso the one named أُولِئكَthose الأَسْمَاءُthe names
She has taken their names, and they are none other than she;
So the one named is those very names.
