قِمْرِيَّةُthe turtledove الأَسْحَارِof the predawn hours لِيto me تُسْعِدُgives comfort
أُنْشِدُI sing فيof غُصْنِيmy bough كَمَّاjust as تُنْشِدُshe sings
The turtledove of the predawn hours comforts me;
I sing of my bough, just as she sings.
بِيI am smitten with شَادِنٌa young gazelle قَلْبيmy heart شَقِيٌّwretched بِهِbecause of him
وَجْداًfrom longing وَطَرْفِيand my eye نَظَراًthrough gazing يَسْعَدُrejoices
I am smitten with a young gazelle; my heart suffers for him,
From longing, while my eye rejoices in gazing.
وَاoh! عَجَباًwhat wonder! مِنْat رَمَدٍeye inflammation نَالَهُafflicted him
وَخِلْتُand I thought أَنَّthat البَدْرَthe full moon لاَnot يَرْمَدُsuffers sore eyes
Oh, how strange that sore eyes should afflict him!
And I had thought the full moon could not suffer sore eyes!
كَيْفَhow اكْتَسَتْclothed itself مُقْلَتُهُhis eye حُمْرَةًin redness
وَالنَّرْجِسُand the narcissus الأَحْمَرُred لاَnot يُعْهَدُis known
How did his eye clothe itself in redness,
When a red narcissus is unheard of?
هَارُوتُهاits Harut أَضْحَىhas become وَمَارُوتُهاand its Marut

عِلْمَهُمَاtheir knowledge بِالسِّحْرِof magic لاَnot يُجْحَدُis denied
Its Harut and its Marut are now
Undeniably versed in magic.
