    O Arabs of al-Jar‘ā’, from the ravine’s right-hand side,

the lovesick lover’s passion is for you, for nothing but you.

Did you not promise us we would see you at Dhū al-Faḍā?

I think you mean that the ghada wood is my heart,

through ardent love for you, while the east wind fans the fire.

Over my fire for you, I tell the east wind: “Blow!”

And in longing, when you incline toward me with desire,

I say by way of excuse: “Swaying befits the boughs.”

And if you kindle a consuming fire, how often it has shone—

while my heart’s fire is in the breast of the distraught lover.

And if you find a torrent and deep waters in the ravine,

you are in the channel of tears, O dwellers in my heart.

Those Babylonian eyelids of yours have taken us captive.

And indeed the discerning mind’s desires in love

are [unclear]—why not for the watcher and a reprover,

so that both may spend the night in torment and weariness?

That gazelle of yours, union with whom is denied,

has laid open my tears’ sanctuary and plundered me utterly.

He is the gazelle—no, rather, his glance hunts gazelles.

And oh, how sweet is capture in the snare of eyelashes!

His glance is sweet; union with him is love’s bitterness.

Nor did it grow sweet until it passed through his sweet saliva.

I am jealous over his form, even of the gray doves—

have you not seen them stir upon the tender branch?

And if her eyelids wilt, narcissus flowers though they are,

it is from the long time I have spent drinking from them.

And a wonder: cups as they are, how is it that,

when broken, they become whole and pass among the drinkers?

Is there, then, a return, in a night of tresses,

that forever tells, from its darkness, of the full moon?

Through it my heart ascended to the secret of its burning.

Peace upon the one beneath whom are rosaries of moisture.

He wished, and took charge of loosing and binding in his presence,

then wronged the prisoner, as attraction demanded.

The drooping of his eyelid invited me to an embrace,

so he answered me: “Boughs have nothing but pouring rain.”

And I trilled as doves trill, seeking a way

to him, through the bond between doves and boughs.

I said, “Beauty’s alms are a duty.” He said, “Never

do leafy boughs bend except toward lamentation.”
