لاَdo not تَخَفْfear مِنْof ظُبَاءِsword-blades تَرِقُّgrow fine حُدُوداin their edges
بَلْrather ظِبَاءٍgazelles فيin الحَيِّthe encampment رَقَّتْgrew tender خُدوُداin their cheeks
Do not fear sword-blades whose edges are fine,
but fear gazelles in the encampment whose cheeks are tender.
فَسِنانُfor the point القَنَاةof the spear أَضْعَفُweaker فِعْلاًin effect
مِنْthan جُفُونٍeyelids وَسْنَىdrowsy عَلَوْنَthey rose above قُدوُداforms
For the spear's point is weaker in effect
than drowsy eyelids crowning those forms.
وَبِروُحِيand with my soul الظِّبْىthe gazelle الذَّيwho قَدْhas حَكَىimitated النَّومَsleep
نَفَاراًin flight عنْfrom نَاظِرِيmy eye وَصُدوُداand in turning away
My soul be ransom for the gazelle who has imitated sleep
in fleeing my eye and turning away.
لَوْif يَرَىcould see غَيرَother than سُقمِthe languor of عَيْنَيهِhis two eyes جَفْنيmy eyelid
مَاnot هَوِيتُI loved الضَّنَاwasting sickness وَرُمْتُand I sought المَزيَداmore
Had my eyelid seen anything but the languor of his eyes,
I would not have loved wasting sickness, nor sought more.
عَاقَبَhe punished القلْبَthe heart إِذْwhen رَأَىَhe saw السُّكرَdrunkenness مِنِّيfrom me

He punished the heart when he saw my drunkenness,
without limit, so that he might enforce the prescribed penalties.
فَهْوَso it فيin ذاthis الخُفُوقِfluttering يَحْكِيresembles وشَاحيْهِhis two sashes
وَفيand in ذَاthis اللَّهِيبِblaze يَحْكِيresembles الخُدُوداthe cheeks
So in this fluttering it resembles his two sashes,
and in this blaze it resembles his cheeks.
نِسْبَةٌan affinity لَوْif يَنَالهاhe gains it حَاسِدِيmy envier مِنْهُfrom him
لأَصْبَحْتُI would surely become لِلْحَسُودِof the envious one حَسُوداenvious
An affinity—if my envier gained it from him,
I would become envious of the envious one.
وَلِعَمْرِيand by my life إنْif خَانَhas betrayed صَبْرِيmy patience فَإِنِّيthen I indeed
أَغْبطُthe most enviable النّاسِof people إِذْsince حَكَاهُit resembled him عُهُوداin pledges
And by my life, if my patience has betrayed me, then I
am the most enviable of people, since it has mirrored him in its pledges.
يَاO خَيَالَphantom of الحَبِيبِthe beloved أَغْمَضْتُI closed my eyes عَمْداًdeliberately

O phantom of the beloved, I have closed my eyes deliberately;
so, through their closing, bring slumber back to me.
يَتَجَافَىdraws away عَنِfrom المَضَاجِعِthe beds جَنْبِيmy side
وَتُقَضِّيand spend time لَكَfor you الجُفونُthe eyelids سُجُوداin prostration
My side draws away from beds,
and my eyelids spend their time in prostration to you.

Do you think the breeze will carry the remnants
of my body, or shall I visit Zarud one day?
