    Do you desire life? Yet Hind's glance—

    what an Indian blade is drawn from it against us!

    We exposed ourselves to her eye until

    we suckled together from cups of passion and longing.

    Then bring my cup in her name; how can you

    pass the cup on while someone still thirsts?

    And keep her cups coming until you see me—

    my eye not seeing you, though you are with me—

    as wine, whose bubbles are none other than itself:

    what a necklace it has, from itself, upon itself!

    وَفِيتُ بِعَهْدِهِ وَوَفَى بِعَهْدِي

    I pass it to my drinking companion, for he is like me;

    I kept his covenant, and he kept mine.

    He guards the secret well; I find him none other than myself.

    Whenever he is with me, I am alone.

    Distance parted us and made my sweetness bitter,

    and through parting clouded the purity of my love.

    I have seen none so reckless as my eye:

    I wrung tears from it, and my draught came forth.

    Nor anything like my heart, where a fire is struck

    at the remembrance of its masters, without a fire-stick.

    Is there no comforter, O Sa'd, to whom I may lament

    my lovesick yearnings and my overwhelming passion?

    I drank the wine of bounty long ago,

    clarified, and free of lees.

    Yet even a fraction of its least has defeated my fingers,

    though I devote to it more than my strength can bear.

    May I be your ransom, O mosque of excellence, where

    my praise and thanks forever sound the call to prayer.

    فَهَامَ بِهَا وَذِكْرُ الحُبَّ يُعْدِي

    And to a yearning lover I spoke Layla's name;

    he grew mad for her: the mention of love is contagious.

    وَبُشْرَى مِنْ عَلِيِّ لَهُ وَعِنْدِي

    I owe him—and have in my keeping—what is hoped for;

    and I hold glad tidings from Ali for him.

    For I am before whoever came before me

    there, and after whoever came after me.

    وَفِي مَالاَ يُقالُ سُكُونُ عَبْدِ

    And in what is said, mine is a free man's speech;

    and in what is not said, a slave's stillness.
