حَنَنْتُI longed إِلَىfor العَهْدِthe former time كَانَwas فَانْقَضَthen passed away
فَهَاso here أَنَاI فِيin الظَّلْمَاءِthe darkness أَلْتَمِسُI seek الصُّبْحَاthe dawn
I longed for the time that was and then passed away;
so here I am in darkness, seeking dawn.
حَرِيقٌُburned بِنَارِby the fire of القَلْبِthe heart لاَnot أُجْملُI bear with composure الأَسَىgrief
غَرِيقٌdrowning بِيَاءِin the water of (probable reading) الدَّمْعِtears لاَnot أُحْسِنُI know how to السَّبحاswim
Burned by the heart's fire, I cannot bear grief with composure;
drowning in the water of tears, I do not know how to swim.
حُجِبْتَyou have been veiled فَمَالِيso I have no فِيin لِقَائِكَmeeting you حِلَةٌa means (probable reading)
عَلَىdespite أَنَّنِيthe fact that I أَظْمَأْI thirst لِحُبِّكَfor your love لَوْif أَصْحَاI become sober
You have been veiled, so I have no means of meeting you,
though, were I sober, I would thirst for your love.
حَشَاىَmy inmost heart وَأَجْفَانِيand my eyelids لَهِيبٌflame وَأَدْمُعُand tears
فَآوِنَةًso at times سَحَاًa downpour وآوِنَةًand at times لَفْحَاa scorching blast
My inmost heart and my eyelids are flame and tears:
so now a downpour, now a scorching blast.
حَلاَwas sweet ليِّto me ذِكْرُthe mention of الحُبِّlove حَتَّىuntil اخْتَبَرْتَهُyou tested it
فَأَلفَيْتُthen I found أَنَّthat الجِدَّearnestness لاَnot يَشْبِهُresembles المَزْحَاjest
The mention of love was sweet to me until you put it to the test;
then I found that earnestness is nothing like jest.
حَبِيبٌa beloved هَجَرْتُI forsook الخَلْقَcreation طَوْعاًwillingly لِحُبِّهِfor love of him
وَمِنَand for أَجْلِهِhis sake أَضْرَبْتُI turned away عَنْfrom ذِكْرِهِمْmentioning them صَفْحَاturning aside
A beloved—for love of him I willingly forsook creation,
and for his sake I turned away from mentioning them.
حَتَمْتُI enjoined عَلىupon قَلْبِيmy heart مَرَاقِبَwatchposts at بَابِهِhis door
عَسَىperhaps مُغْلِقُthe closer of الأَبْوَابِthe doors يُعْقِبُهَاwill follow them with فَتْحَاan opening
I charged my heart to keep watch at his door,
hoping that he who shuts the doors will follow their closing with an opening.
حُسِدْتُI was envied عَلىfor دَمْعٍِtears عَلَيْكَfor you أَرَقْتُهُI shed them
وَذَاكَand that لأَنَّbecause الحُبَّlove بِالسِّحِّthrough streaming tears قَدْindeed صَحَّاproved true
I was envied for the tears I shed for you,
and that is because love has proved true through torrents of tears.
حَنَانَيْكَyour mercy, I beg you لَيْسَis not الصَّبْرُpatience عَنْكَaway from you بِمُمْكِنٍat all possible
فإِنْso if لَمْnot أَنَلْI obtain مِنْكَfrom you المَحَبَّةَlove فَالصَّفْحَاthen pardon
Mercy, I beg you! Patience apart from you is impossible;
so if I gain no love from you, then grant me pardon.

My gaze and my hearing are forbidden to the two Eids,
for you, O my lord, are my Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
