أَيُنْكِرُdoes ... deny? الوَجْدُlonging أَنِّيthat I فِيin الهَوىَlove شَحِبُpale
وَدُونَand beneath كُلِّevery دُخَانٍsmoke سَاطِعٍrising لَهِبُa flame
Can longing deny that I am pale with love,
When beneath all rising smoke lies a flame?
وَمَاand not سَلَوتُI ceased to love كَمَاas ظَنَّthought الوِشَاةُthe slanderers وَلاَnor
أَسْلُوI cease to love كَمَاas يَتَرجَّىhopes العَاذِلُthe reproacher التَّعِبُweary
And I have not ceased to love, as the slanderers thought, nor
Will I cease to love, as the weary reproacher hopes.
فَإِنْso if بَكَىweeps لِصَبَابَاتِيfor my ardent longings عَذُولُa reproacher of هَوىًlove
فَلىthen for me بِمَاin what مِنْهُbecause of it يَبْكِىweeps عَاذِليmy reproacher طَرَبُrapture
So if a reproacher of love weeps for my ardent longings,
Then what makes my reproacher weep brings me rapture.
نَاشَدْتُكَI adjure you الَّلهَby God يَاO رُوحيmy soul اذْهُبَىdepart كَلَفاًin ardent longing
بِحُبِّfor love of قَوْمٍa people عَنِfrom الجَرْعَاءِal-Jarʿāʾ قَدْalready ذَهَبُواthey departed
I adjure you by God, O my soul: depart in ardent longing
For love of a people who have left al-Jarʿāʾ.
لاَdo not تَسْأَلِيْهُمْask them ذِمَاماًa pledge فِيin مَحَبَّتِهمْlove for them
فَطَالَمَاfor long قَدْindeed وَفَاkept faith بِالذِّمَةِwith the covenant العَرَبُthe Arabs
Do not ask them for a pledge in your love for them;
For the Arabs have long kept faith with their pledges.
هُمْthey أَهْلُworthy of وُدِّيmy love وَهَذَاand this وَاجِبٌis owed لَهُمُto them
وَإِنَّمَاbut as for وُدهُمْtheir love ليfor me فَهْوَthen it لاَnot يَجِبُis obligatory
They are worthy of my love, and this is their due;
But their love for me is not a duty.
هُمْthey أَلْبَسُونِيclothed me سِقَاماًsickness مِنْfrom جُفُونِهِمُtheir eyelids
أَصْبَحْتُI have become أَرْفُلُI strut فِيهِin it وَهْوَwhile it يَنْسَحِبُtrails
They clothed me in sickness from their eyelids;
I now strut in it as it trails behind me.
وَصَيَّرَتْand turned أَدْمُعيmy tears حُمْراًred خُدُودُهمُtheir cheeks
فَكَيْفَso how أَجْحَدُcan I deny مَاwhat مَنُّواthey bestowed وَمَاand what وَهَبُواthey gave
And their cheeks have turned my tears red;
So how can I deny what they bestowed and what they gave?
هَلِis ...? السَّلاَمَةُsafety إِلاَّexcept أَنْthat أَمُوتَI die بِهِمْfor them
وَجْداًof longing وَإِلاَّand otherwise فبُقْيَاىَthen my survival هُوَit is العَطَبُruin
Is there any safety but in dying for them
Of longing? Otherwise, my survival is ruin.
إِنْif يَسْلُبُواthey take away البَعْضَa part مِنِّيof me فَالجَميعُthen the whole لَهُمْbelongs to them
وَإِنّand indeed أَشْرفَthe noblest of أَجْزَائِيmy parts الَّذِيthat which سَلَبُواthey took
If they take a part of me, the whole belongs to them;
And indeed, the noblest part of me is what they took.
لَوْif تَعْلَمُknew العَذَبَاتُthe bough-tips المَايسَاتُswaying بِمَنْof whom
قَدْalready بَانَdeparted عَنْهَاfrom them إِذَنْthen مَاnot اخْضَرَّتِgrew green العَذَبُthe bough-tips
If the swaying boughs had known who
Had left them, those boughs would not have grown green.
وَلَوْand if دَرَىknew مَنْهُلُthe watering place of الوَادِيthe valley الذَّيwhich وَرَدُواthey visited
مَنْwho وَارِدُواvisitors to مَائِهِits water لاَهْتَزَّهُwould surely shake it الطَرَبُrapture
And had the valley's watering place they visited known
Who came to its water, rapture would have shaken it.
إِنِّيindeed I لأَكْتُمُI surely stifle أَنْفَاسِيmy breaths إِذَاwhen ذُكِرُواthey are mentioned
كَليْلاَlest يُحرِّقَهُمْburn them مِنْfrom زَفْرَتيmy sigh اللَّهَبُthe flame
I truly stifle my breaths when they are mentioned,
Lest the flame from my sigh should burn them.
وَتُرْسِلُand pours forth الدَّمْعَtears عَيْنيmy eye فِيin مَنَازِلِهِمْtheir dwellings
كَيْلاَlest تُسَابِقَهَاoutstrip it فِيin سَحِّهَاits downpour السُّحُبُthe clouds
And my eye pours forth tears at their dwellings,
Lest the clouds outstrip it in its downpour.
كَذَاthus لِكُلِّfor every مُحِبٍّlover غَيْرَةٌjealousy لَهُمُfor them
وَعِنْدَand in كُلِّevery غَيوُرٍjealous lover فِطْنَةٌdiscernment عَجَبُwondrous
Such is every lover's jealousy for them;
And every jealous lover has wondrous insight.
أُسَائِلُI question البَانَthe bān trees عَنْabout مَيْلِthe swaying of النَّسِيمِthe breeze بِهِمْwith them
سُؤَالَthe questioning of مَنْone for whom لَيْسَnot يُدْرَىis known فِيهِconcerning it مَاwhat السَّبَبُthe cause
I ask the bān trees about the breeze's swaying them,
As one to whom the reason for it is unknown.
وَتِلْكَand those آثَارُtraces of لِينٍsuppleness مِنْfrom قُدُودِهِمُtheir forms
مَرَّتْpassed بِهَاover them الرِّيحُthe wind فَاهْتَزَّتْso swayed لَهَاin response to it القُضُبُthe slender branches
And those are traces of suppleness from their forms:
The wind passed over them, and the slender branches swayed in response.
