تَذَكَّرَremembered بِالحِمَىin the sanctuary قَلْبيmy heart الطَّرُوبُrapturous
لَيَاليَnights غَابَwas absent عَنْهُنَfrom them الرَّقِيبُthe watcher
In the sanctuary, my rapturous heart recalled
Nights when the watcher was absent,
وَأَيَّاماًand days صَفَاwas serene عَيْشُthe life التَّصَابيof youthful dalliance
وَمَنْand the one whom أَهْوىI love نَدِيمىَmy boon companion وَالحَبيِبُand the beloved
And days when the life of youthful dalliance was serene,
And the one I love was my boon companion and beloved.

My heart, a stranger among the tribe, is in your sanctuary,
A guest in your dwellings, a stranger.
رَحَلتُمْyou departed عَنْfrom حِمىَthe sanctuary of الوَادِيthe valley سُحَيْراًjust before dawn
وَسِرْتُمْand you journeyed وَهْوَwhile it was خَلْفَكُمُbehind you جَنِيبُa led mount
You left the valley’s sanctuary just before dawn,
And journeyed on, my heart a led mount behind you.
عَجِبْتُI marveled لِنَارِكُمْat your fire بِرُبَاon the hills of المُصَلَّىal-Musalla

I marveled at your fire on the hills of al-Musalla,
And from it the lovesick lover melts in Najd,
وَنَشْرِكُمُand your fragrance عَلىacross بُعْدٍdistance وَقُرْبٍand nearness
إلىto المُشْتَاقِthe yearning lover تَحْمِلُهُcarries it الجَنُوبُthe south wind
And at your fragrance, both far and near,
Which the south wind carries to the yearning lover.
وَإنْand if أَرْجُوكُمُI hope in you وَأَخِيبُand am disappointed كُلاًّno indeed!
سِوَاكُمْanyone but you قَصْدُthe purpose of رَاجِيهone who hopes in him يَخِيبُfails
And if I hope in you, shall I be disappointed? Never!
Whoever hopes in anyone but you sees his purpose fail.
وَبِيand I am smitten with مَنْone whom لاnot أُسَمِِّيهِI name him حَيَاءًout of modesty
بِحُكْمِbecause of حُضُورِهِhis presence فَهْوَfor he is الرَّقِيبُthe watcher
And I am smitten with one I do not name, out of modesty,
Because he is present—for he is the watcher.
يَمِيسُsways gracefully قَوَامُهُhis figure فَيكَادُso nearly قَلْبيmy heart
يَطيرُflies مِنَfrom اللَّذَاذَةِdelight إِذْwhen يَطيِبُit grows glad
His figure sways, and my heart almost
Flies with delight when it grows glad.
