يَاO خَدَّهُhis cheek وَثَنَايَاand the front teeth ثَغْرِهِof his mouth النّضِدِwell-arrayed
مَنْwho سَوّغَsanctioned الجَمْعَthe joining بَيْنَbetween الجَمْرِembers وَالبَرَدِand hail
O his cheek and the well-set front teeth of his mouth—
O cheek and curves of his alluring lips
who sanctioned the joining of embers and hail?
Who made possible to join coal and ice together
وَيَاand O تَلَهُّبَblazing قَلْبِيof my heart فِيat مَحَاسِنِهِhis charms
قَدْindeed أُعْجِزَhas been rendered powerless الدَّمْعُtears أَنْto يُطْفِيكَquench you فَاتَّقِدِso blaze on
And O my heart’s blaze at his charms,
And o burning of my heart for his beauty
tears have proved powerless to quench you, so blaze on.
Tears fail to extinguish you so blaze
مَاwhat ضَرَّharm would it do مِعْطَفَكَyour form البَّادِيplainly visible تَأَوُّدُهُits swaying
لَوْif كَانَwere يُبْقِيshowing mercy تَثَنِّيةِbending عَلىto أَوَدِيmy bentness
What harm would it do your form, whose swaying is plain,
Your visible cloak matters not its affection
if its bending spared my bowed frame?
If only it would keep a fold on the valleys
وَصَلْتَyou prolonged هَجْرَكَyour desertion إِعْرِاضاًturning away لِتَقْطَعَنِيto cut me off
أَمَاwas it not كَفَاكَenough for you الذِّيwhat أَخْلَدْتَyou made everlasting فِيin خَلَدِيmy mind
You prolonged your desertion, turning away to cut me off;
You connected your estrangement to cut me off
was what you fixed forever in my mind not enough for you?
Isn’t what you consigned to my eternity enough
لَوْif كَانَhad been يَعْلَمُaware طَرْفِيmy eye أَنْthat يَزيدَit would grow ظَماًin thirst
فِيin وِرْدِهِits coming to water مَاءَthe water ذَاكَthat الحُسْنِbeauty لَمْnot يَرِدِcome to drink
Had my eye known that its thirst would grow
If my eyes knew to increase the tears
on coming to the water of that beauty, it would not have come.
In their ritual for that beauty, it wouldn’t cease
فاليَوْمَso today مِنْfrom فَرْطِexcess إِلْفِيmy familiarity بِالصَّبَابَةِwith ardent longing لَوْif
تَرُومُyou seek نُقْصَانَlessening مَاwhat أَلْقَىI endure لَقُلْتُI would say زِدِincrease it
So today, so accustomed am I to ardent longing that, if
For today, from my excessive friendship with youth
you sought to lessen what I endure, I would say, “Increase it.”
If it pretended decreasing what I found, I’d say give more
فَلاَso do not تُغِبْstay away from نَاظِراًan eye تَلْقَاكَgreets you عَبْرَتُهُits tears
فالشَّمْسُfor the sun تُسْبِلُmakes flow دَمْعَthe tears الأَعْيُنِof the eyes الرُّمُدِinflamed
So do not stay away from an eye whose tears greet you,
So don’t be absent, your tears meeting you
for the sun draws tears from inflamed eyes.
As the sun pours tears from sleepy eyes
