O you who dwell in my heart,

When shall I attain nearness to you?

You have robbed me, and yet

I am happy in being robbed.

    O Arabs of Wadi al-Musalla,

You are indeed the best of Arabs.

    Your guest is love-distraught,

    Bewildered of heart, held captive.

And I do not cease to love you—

Far be it from my passion and my love!

If you consent to rescue me,

Then that is my heart's desire.

My soul is yours, if you accept it,

And the soul is the utmost a lover can give.

    You are my heart's treasure

On the Day of Return, and all I need.

I have loved you, and I am justified

If I swagger from sheer self-admiration,

    And sway drunkenly—and why not?

For it was from you that I drank.

And my beloved has indeed given me drink,

And singled me out over my companions.

And I do not, after beholding

Plainly the radiance of my Lord's face,

Yearn for laurel and ben trees,

Or the mention of a cave and dunes.
