Never be deceived by the softness in his cheek:

for the sword is deadly through the fineness of its edge.

And leave his eyelids be: their drowsy gaze

has become nothing but a spearhead in the straight shaft of his stature.

A gazelle—his ceaseless flight mirrors my sleep

in shunning me; so sleep's opposite keeps me company, along with his rejection.

    فَهَوِيتُ ذَاكَ لإِنَّهُ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ

    And wasting stole into my body from his waist;

so I loved it, since it came from him.

The envious man marveled when he saw my drunkenness without

limit, while my heart endured its prescribed punishment.

Calm yourself: does not the flutter of his sash—

or the blaze of his cheek—mirror my heart?

It is an affinity: had my heart attained it,

while ablaze, I would have excused its burning.

I thank my patience in his absence, for it betrayed me

and saw betrayal as faithfulness to its pledge.

And away with my tears, and perdition to them! They are

pearls in my keeping, but have not been in his necklace.

Who will do me justice against his nearness? For he has refused

my nearness; and who is there to rescue me from his distance?

O ban-tree of the valley, and O its gray dove,

mourn for your branch, as I mourn for losing him.

You are sorrowful, and sorrowful am I; both of us

are excused today, each lamenting out of longing.

My state is like yours, and one whose palm is close

to water knows its heat from its cold.
