شَهِدْتَyou beheld نَفْسَكَyourself فِينَاin us وهيwhile it is وَاحِدَةٌone
شَهِدْتَ نَفْسَكَ فِينَا وهي وَاحِدَةٌ
كَثِيرةٌmanifold ذَاتُendowed with أَوْصَافٍattributes وَأَسْمَاءِand names
كَثِيرةٌ ذَاتُ أَوْصَافٍ وَأَسْمَاءِ
You beheld yourself in us: one,
Yet manifold, endowed with attributes and names.
وَنَحْنُand we فِيكَin you شَهِدْنَاwe beheld بَعْدَafter كَثْرَتِنَاour multiplicity
وَنَحْنُ فِيكَ شَهِدْنَا بَعْدَ كَثْرَتِنَا
عَينْاًan essence بِهَاin which اتَّحَدَbecame one المَرْئيُّthe seen والرَّائيand the seer
عَينْاً بِهَا اتَّحَدَ المَرْئيُّ والرَّائي
And we beheld in you, after our multiplicity,
An essence in which the seen and the seer became one.
فَأًَوَّلٌso, first أَنْتَyou مِنْfrom قَبْلِbefore الظُّهُورِmanifestation لَنَاto us
فَأًَوَّلٌ أَنْتَ مِنْ قَبْلِ الظُّهُورِ لَنَا
وَأَخِرٌand last أَنْتَyou عِنْدَfor النَّازِحِthe far-off one النَّائِيthe distant
وَأَخِرٌ أَنْتَ عِنْدَ النَّازِحِ النَّائِي
So you are the First, before appearing to us,
And you are the Last for the far-off, distant one.
وَبَاطِنٌand hidden فِيin شُهُودِthe witnessing العَيْنِthe essence وَاحِدُهُits One
وَبَاطِنٌ فِي شُهُودِ العَيْنِ وَاحِدُهُ
وَظَاهِرٌand manifest لاِمْتَيِازَاتٍthrough distinctions بأَسْمَاءِby names
وَظَاهِرٌ لاِمْتَيِازَاتٍ بأَسْمَاءِ
And hidden in the witnessing of the essence is its One,
And manifest through distinctions made by names.
أَنْتَyou المُلَقِّنُthe prompter سِرّاًa secret لاَnot أَفُوهُI speak بِهِof it
أَنْتَ المُلَقِّنُ سِرّاً لاَ أَفُوهُ بِهِ
وأَنْتَand you نُطْقِيَmy speech وَالمُصْغِىand the attentive listener لِنَجْوَائيto my whispered confidences
وأَنْتَ نُطْقِيَ وَالمُصْغِى لِنَجْوَائي
You are the prompter of a secret I do not utter,
And you are my speech and the listener to my whispered confidences.
