Upon his temple are sprays of his own musk;
On his cheek, there is musk emanating from him, exhilarating,
And on his cheek, copyists write with musk from him.
And on his face, there is musk from him, pleasurable.
كَأَنَّas though تثَنِّيthe swaying قَدِّهِof his stature غُصْنُa branch بَانةٍof a bān tree

His swaying form is like a bān-tree branch,
As if the bending of his neck is a bough of an acacia tree,
Upon it a black, skin-shedding serpent, resembling hair.
Upon it, resembling hair, intensely black, thriving.
أَلاَcome now فَارْوِيَاso relate, you two عَنِّيfrom me أَحَادِيثَthe tales حُبِّهَاof love for her
فَمَاfor ... not شَافَsaw أَهْلاًkin قَطُّever فِيْهَاin them النَواسِخُthe abrogators
Come, you two: relate from me the tales of love for her,
Come, convey from me the stories of her love,
For abrogators have never found kin among them.
In it, the elders never healed fully, always yearning.
وَكَمْand many a لَيْلَةٍnight قَدْindeed بِتُّI spent the night سُكْراًin drunkenness بِحُبِّهَاwith love for her
وَشَيْبُand gray hairs شَدَاsang الأَوْتَارِthe strings عِنْدىbeside me شَوَادِخُbroad white blazes
And many a night have I spent drunk with love for her,
And many a night I have spent intoxicated with love for her,
And gray hairs were broad white blazes as the strings sang beside me.
My graying hair pulled the strings taut within me, flourishing.
فَلِمْthen why يُنْتَهِزْbe chastised فِيْهَاin it التَّصَابِيyouthful dalliance والصِّبَاand youth
وَقَدْand already أُوْعِدَتْhave been threatened بِالإِنْتَهَازِwith chastisement المَشَايخُthe elders
Then why should youthful dalliance and youth be chastised therein,
Why seize in it the pleasures and youth,
When the elders have been threatened with chastisement?
When the elders have been promised seizing, withering.
