He yearned for the arak-covered hills and Hind's encampment,

Laid low by passion, a companion of longing.

And lightning flashes stirred him, so he yearned ardently

To sip the dusky hue from Hind's lips.

I grew drunk, and from her graces comes my wine,

And from her cheeks, my myrtle and my roses.

She is veiled, yet she is within my heart,

In the abode of my passion and the dwelling of my love.

And remembering her let me behold a beauty

Whose description I deem beyond all bounds.

When a smile reveals a strung necklace,

I embrace it, then scatter my whole necklace.

And I passed the night—ask not about a lover's life,

Who won union after estrangement and rejection.
