By the bond of love, O people of Zarud,

Who, I wonder, taught you to break your pledges?

Have you, I wonder, grown weary of your slave,

Or have you heard the envious one's words about him?

Is every lover of yours treated thus,

Or am I alone singled out for rejection?

    أَنا في حُبِّى لَكُمْ بَعْضُ الْعَبِيدِ

    Be as I wish, then, my masters;

In my love for you, I am but one of the slaves.

And yours is a deed of my bondage, written

With the ink of tears upon the parchment of cheeks.

Whenever I sought to claim union with you,

Reverence held me back from approaching.
