رويّتنيyou drenched me الحبّlove حتىuntil ثارَrose in revolt صلصاليmy clay
وأستُنفرَand was roused الوردُthe roses فيin لحميmy flesh وأوصاليand my limbs
You drenched me in love until my clay rose in revolt,
Love stirred me up until my inner self boiled,
And the roses were roused in my flesh and limbs.
And roses were provoked within my flesh and limbs.
واستقرأand discerned الخلقُhumankind عطرthe fragrance of الشوقlonging فيin لغةٍa language

And humankind discerned longing’s fragrance in a language
People read the fragrance of passion in a language
That sorrow inspired in my words and deeds.
Inspired by the yearning in my words and deeds.
ألهمتنيyou inspired me السحرَmagic حتىuntil خلتُنيI imagined myself قبساًa flame
يسعىmoves along بيَwith me النورlight .. والأنوارand the lights تسعىstrive ليfor me
You inspired me with magic until I imagined myself a flame;
Magic inspired me until I became a ray
Light carries me along, and lights strive for me,
That light rushes towards .. and lights rush towards me

Until, through purity of heart, I attained what
Until with the core of my heart I reached what
Hearts could not attain—without reminders of favors or pleading.
Hearts were incapable of ... without grace or inquiry

O guardian of the letter, this love is a miracle
O master of the letter this love is a miracle
That brought what had never once come to mind.
That brought what never occurred to any mind
