على سررٍ من المعنى الرقيقِ

منمنمةً بفكرٍ  من عقيق

منمنمةً بفكرٍ من عقيق

Upon couches of delicate meaning,

On couches of subtle meaning

Finely ornamented with thought of agate,

Adorned with thoughts of carnelian

تجاذبنا الرؤى نَوْرًا ونورًا

تجاذبنا الرؤى نَوْرًا ونورًا

وأنْهَكنَا السوانحَ بالحقيقِ

وأنْهَكنَا السوانحَ بالحقيقِ

We exchanged visions—blossom and light—

We exchanged visions, light upon light

And exhausted passing inspirations with truth.

And exhausted the passions with truth

تخلّينا .. فأعلانا التحلّي

تخلّينا .. فأعلانا التحلّي

لحبٍّ .. من تجلّينا .. وثيقِ

لحبٍّ .. من تجلّينا .. وثيقِ

We emptied ourselves; then self-adornment exalted us

We shed our skins, so we rose naked

To a love made steadfast through our unveiling.

To a love, from our manifestation, intimate

وهذّبنا  الخواطرَ  باقتدارٍ

وهذّبنا الخواطرَ باقتدارٍ

إلى أن أجَّ جوهرُها الحقيقي

إلى أن أجَّ جوهرُها الحقيقي

And we refined our thoughts with mastery,

And we refined the sentiments with mastery

Until their true essence blazed.

Until their essential reality came to fruition

فكنتُ وكنتَ كالقِدْحِ المعلّى

فكنتُ وكنتَ كالقِدْحِ المعلّى

فماذا بعدُ نرجو .. يا رفيقي

فماذا بعدُ نرجو .. يا رفيقي

So I was, and you were, like the arrow that wins the greatest share;

So I was and you were like the elevated chalice

What more, then, do we hope for, my companion?

What more can we hope for, my friend?
