أتىhe came بالصّبحwith the dawn ريّانَbrimming الصباحِthe morning
وأهدانيand he gave me البنفسجَviolets والأقاحيand daisies
He came with the dawn, brimming with morning.
He came at dawn, refreshing the morning,
And gave me violets and daisies.
And gifted me violets and peach blossoms,
وعطّرand he perfumed منfrom نديّdewy freshness الحرفthe word روحيmy soul
وأثملنيand he intoxicated me .. بمعسولٍwith honeyed sweetness مبــاحِpermitted
And perfumed my soul with the dew-freshness of words.
And scented my soul with the perfume of eloquence,
And intoxicated me with lawful, honeyed sweetness.
And weighed me down with lawful sweetness,
وضمّand he clasped القلبَthe heart بالأشواقwith longings ضمًّاan embrace
فكادso nearly الشوقُlonging يكسرُbreaks ليfor me جناحيmy wing
And clasped my heart in an embrace of longing.
And clasped my heart with longing and yearning,
So longing nearly broke my wing.
Nearly breaking my wings with desire,
ليَfor me الرحمنthe Most Merciful .. إمّاif زارhe visited ليلًاat night
سيفضحُwill expose نورُهhis light .. سرّthe secret of الصباحthe morning
The Most Merciful is there for me—if he visits by night,
For the Merciful - if He were to visit my night,
His light will expose the morning's secret.
His light would expose the secret of dawn.
