How many times have you shut the door to questions,

and rebuffed a soul shackled by love for you?

How many times have you extinguished my lamp, which

I lit with hopes of neglected replies?

What of the longings, what of my own tears,

of my heart, set ablaze by the fire of passion?

    مازلتَ تَضربُ بالكلامِ الأمْثِلة

    You still tell my rose of quenching its thirst;

you still offer examples in words.

What have you saved but your inkwell for her

whom fancies have carried headlong toward a meeting?

I have indeed grown weary—as you stoke my bewilderment—

of the humiliation of waiting for you and the matter’s ambiguity.

“Do not ask”—is this your answer whenever

you lose the compass on the path of love?!
