فبأيّ قلبٍ .. يعقلُ المجنونُ ؟
In my love for you are reason and madness.
With what heart, then, can a madman reason?

أو شئتُ هجرك .. كهلةً سأكونُ
If I seek union with you, I enter the years of youth;
Or if I wish to forsake you, I shall be a middle-aged woman.

شفّعتُ فيه ! ...فويحه المفتونُ
Tell me, by your Lord, how can I be fair in a love
In which I have accepted intercession! Alas for him, the bewitched one!

No, by Him who raised the sky and adorned it,
I was never subdued, though my heart's core softens.

خَلْقُ الضياء..فكيف ينجو الطين ُ؟!!
Yet I have hung a full moon in the sky—
A creation of light—how, then, can clay escape?

أإلى غيابٍ تنتهي ...وأهونُ ؟!!
You have bewildered me, and my misgivings about you have grown.
Will you end in absence, and I lose my worth?

How long, then, will you remain like one cracking colocynth,
Weeping for the beloved, though your place with him is secure?

And how long will you watch the stars in their sphere,
Until fears and suspicions have assailed you?

فالدمع مِن بَعد الفراق عيونُ
By God, do not burden my heart with separation;
For after parting, tears are springs.

And longing sears me and sets my ribs aflame,
And when evening falls, they moan.

Do not fear the reproach of the reproachers, for each of them
Is a lovesick soul who has died, or a sorrowful lover.

You are hope, and in you is all that is hoped for.
So let what lies in both beating hearts be revealed.

Speak plainly, and say, if you wish, the words of one assured:
Indeed, I am enthralled by love for you, full of longing.
