How can I hide my love for you,

when my whole being betrays it through its telltale signs?

آهِah! منfrom شوقٍlonging تجلّىbecame manifest
آهِ من شوقٍ تجلّى
شفّrevealed عنof وجدٍpassion وميلand desire
شفّ عن وجدٍ وميل
Ah, for a longing that revealed itself,
Ah, the longing that shone forth,
laying bare ardent passion and desire.
Revealing passion and desire.
لامَنيreproached me منwhoever لامَreproached .. جهلاًin ignorance
لامَني من لامَ .. جهلاً
بالهوىof love .. والعَذلand reproach عذلِيmy reproach
بالهوى .. والعَذل عذلِي
Whoever reproached me did so in ignorance
Whoever reproached me did so in ignorance
of love—and the reproach is mine to bear.
Of love—and the reproach is mine.
ياO خليّاًone untouched by love .. عابَfound fault with مابيwhat ails me
يا خليّاً .. عابَ مابي
لاmay not ابتلاكَafflict you اللهGod .. مثلِيlike me
لا ابتلاكَ الله .. مثلِي
O you untouched by love, who faulted my condition,
O you untouched by love, who faulted what ails me,
may God never afflict you as He has me.
