It is you I mean, stubborn one—so do not ask:

“Whom do you mean by affection and lovesickness?”

And for the loveliest, peerless pair have mellowed

these poems, all passion and yearning.

For whom, then, will I write, if I pen a pearl of verse?

And of whom shall I boast before friends and kin?

For the silvery threshing floor that contended with a coal-black one,

until it withdrew, humbled and abased.

And for your cheeks, as you read a revolution,

and for it, and from it, I set the red anemones aflame.

And for the magic of your voice—how I love hearing it—

and for your sideburns, which stir melancholy.

For you, you alone, I urge on my pickaxes,

so their thrusts may shake the earths.

For your soul’s struggle when it overthrows its doubt,

until it strengthens certainty with certainty.

So, by the One who gave you the sweetest smile,

leave what makes you doubt; what has happened is enough for us.

For I fear for you, O my own self, and I am slain by

my longing for you, and seeing you sorrowful.

My wish is that no tears fall from the eye that

I love, and that it not be stirred to moaning.

O you—you! You already know, so do not ask

again: “By God, whom, I wonder, do you mean?”
