عَنْabout أيwhich روحٍsoul تُسألُare asked الأرواحthe souls
عَنْ أي روحٍ تُسألُ الأرواح
عمّنabout the one who تغيبis absent أمِor الّتيthe one that تجتاحُoverwhelms
عمّن تغيب أمِ الّتي تجتاحُ
About which soul are the souls asked?
Of what spirit do spirits ask,
About the one that is absent, or the one that overwhelms?
Of her who is absent, or she who comes sweeping by?
حيّرتَyou have bewildered قَلبِيmy heart فِيin وِصَالكَunion with you والنّوىand separation
حيّرتَ قَلبِي فِي وِصَالكَ والنّوى
فَالشّوقُfor longing فِيin حَاليهِمَاtheir two states ذبّاحُa slaughterer
فَالشّوقُ فِي حَاليهِمَا ذبّاحُ
You have bewildered my heart in union with you and in separation;
You have perplexed my heart with your union and purpose,
For longing is a slaughterer in both states.
Thus longing in either state slaughters me.
صِلنيbe with me أوor اهجرنيforsake me فطيرُكَfor your bird عالقٌtrapped
صِلني أو اهجرني فطيرُكَ عالقٌ
كُسِرَwas broken الجَنَاحُthe wing وضُيّعand was lost المفْتَاحُthe key
كُسِرَ الجَنَاحُ وضُيّع المفْتَاحُ
Be with me or forsake me, for your bird is trapped;
Unite me or abandon me, for your bird is snared,
The wing was broken, and the key was lost.
The wing is broken and the key is lost.
