جعلَhas made القساوةcruelty طبعَهhis nature أنْto يعشقاfall in love ؟!
I was smitten with a cruel heart ... how could one
I have fallen for a heart so cold...
Who has made cruelty his nature ever fall in love?!
How could one so cruel by nature love?
لوقلتُhad I recited شعريmy verse فيamong الجبالthe mountains تصدّعتthey split apart
أوor كانit had been فيin صخرٍrock أصمّsolid تشقّقاit cracked
Had I recited my verse among the mountains, they would have split apart;
If I recited my poetry to the mountains, they would crack
Or had it been within solid rock, the rock would have cracked.
Or if to deaf rock, it would split
أوor قلتهُI recited it فيamong المعصراتِthe rain clouds .. لأنزلتْthey would pour down
ثجّاًa torrent يكادُalmost منfrom الجوىlove's anguish أنto يُغرِقاdrown
Or had I recited it among the rain clouds, they would have poured down
If I recited it to presses... it would pour down
A torrent that, from love's anguish, would almost drown one.
A torrent that could drown one in passion
لوif أنّنيthat I نحوtoward الدجىthe darkness .. I sent it
قدّcleft الدُجىthe darkness .. وand بكفّwith a palm نورٍof light مزّقاtore apart
Had I sent it toward the darkness,
If I directed it to the darkness...
It would have cleft the darkness and torn it apart with a palm of light.
It would light the dark, tearing it with rays
أوor أننيthat I أودعتهI placed it بُوراًfallow earth ... ربَتْit swelled
أوor أنّهthat it فيin مَيْتِdead عودٍa branch ... أورقَاit sprouted leaves
Or had I placed it in fallow earth, the earth would have swelled;
Or if I entrusted it to the sands... it would nurture
Or had it been in a dead branch, the branch would have sprouted leaves.
Or if it were in dead wood... it would leaf
وببحرِand with the sea قزوينCaspian العظيمthe great مزجتُهI mingled it
لغداit would have become زلالاًclear, sweet water .. ثمّthen فاضoverflowed وأغدقَاand poured abundantly
And had I mingled it with the great Caspian Sea,
And in the great Caspian Sea I mixed it
It would have become clear, sweet water, then overflowed and poured abundantly.
It would turn clear, then overflow and pour
منwho أنتyou حتّىthat يستفيقawakens لكَfor you الهوىlove
منwho أنتَyou .. حتّىthat تستبدّyou tyrannize وتُؤرِقاand cause sleeplessness
Who are you, that love should awaken for you?
Who are you that love awakens for you
Who are you, to lord it over me and keep me sleepless?
Who are you...that you seize and torment?
منwho أنتَyou حتىthat تحتويكَenfold you أضَالعيmy ribs
كيماso that تسعّرَyou kindle بالجفاءِwith coldness..
Who are you, that my ribs should enfold you,
Who are you that my ribs contain you
So you may set longing aflame with your coldness?
So you can ignite with frost, longing?
قلْtell ليto me بربِكَby your Lord منwho تكونُyou are ..أسرتنيyou captured me
فأضعتُso I lost فيكover you رزانتيmy composure والمنطقَاand reason
Tell me, by your Lord, who are you? You have captured me,
Tell me, by your Lord, who you are...you captivated me
And so, over you, I lost my composure and reason.
So I lost my composure and logic
وبأيّand by what حقٍright هكذاlike this .. أغويتنِيyou beguiled me
بلrather كيفhow أوهمتَyou deluded الفؤادَthe heart فصدّقاso it believed
And by what right did you beguile me like this?
By what right...did you so beguile me?
Rather, how did you delude my heart, so that it believed?
How did you delude my heart into believing?
ماكانwas not قلبيmy heart قبلbefore حبّكloving you أحمقاًfoolish !!!
صيّرْتهُyou turned it into القلبَthe heart الجهولَutterly ignorant الأحمقَاfoolish!
My heart was not foolish before loving you!
My heart was not foolish before your love!!!
You turned it into an ignorant, foolish heart!
You made it an ignorant, foolish heart!
أتظننيdo you think me .. أنثىa woman تكبّلshackles نفسهَاherself
وتعودُand returns تشكوto complain .. للحبيبto the beloved ليُعتقاso he may free her
Do you think me a woman who shackles herself,
Do you think I am a woman who binds herself
And returns to complain to her beloved so he may set her free?
And gets used to complaining, so her lover frees her?
إنّيindeed, I am التيthe woman who إنif مسّtouches عشقٌlove عقلَهاher mind
هيهاتَnever ينفعهاوقدhelp her, when already سُحِرتْshe has been bewitched رُقَىincantations
I am that woman: if love touches her mind,
I am the one who, when passion touches her mind
No incantations can ever help her once she is bewitched.
Alas, remedies will not help, for she is enchanted
ياO أيّهاyou الرّجلُthe man الرفيعُexalted .. مقامُهhis standing
سأظلّI shall remain أرْقبُI await فِيin غراميmy passion الموثِقاthe binding pledge
O man of exalted standing,
O noble man...his status is high
I shall keep awaiting, in my passion, the binding pledge.
I will remain watching in my lasting love
ووصيّتيand my bequest روحيmy soul التيwhich عذّبتهاyou tormented it
حتّىuntil تُردّit is returned إليّto me إنْif ..كُتِبَis decreed الّلقاthe meeting
And my bequest is my soul, which you have tormented,
And my will to my soul that you tormented
Until it is returned to me, if a meeting is decreed.
Is to return to me, if we are destined to meet again
