للهto God (expressing wonder) أنتِyou ومَاand what فعلتِyou have done بقلبهِto his heart
لله أنتِ ومَا فعلتِ بقلبهِ
وبمَاand with what عبثْتِyou have toyed بذاwith this الجليلِvenerable one ولُبّهand his mind
وبمَا عبثْتِ بذا الجليلِ ولُبّه
By God, how wondrous you are—and what you have done to his heart!
You are my God, what you have done to his heart
And how you have toyed with this venerable one and his mind!
How you have toyed with this noble soul
ياO فتنةًenchantment قَتَلتْshe killed وماand did not بَسَطتْshe stretched out يَداa hand
يا فتنةً قَتَلتْ وما بَسَطتْ يَدا
وحكمْتِand you decreed .. إلّاonly أنthat يبوءَhe be burdened بحُبّهwith his love
وحكمْتِ .. إلّا أن يبوءَ بحُبّه
O enchantment that killed without stretching out a hand!
O seductress, you killed without lifting a hand
And you decreed... only that he be burdened with his love.
And ruled... except to make him suffer for his love
لَاdo not تفْتكِيslay إلّاexcept بأربابِagainst the lords of الهَوىpassion
لَا تفْتكِي إلّا بأربابِ الهَوى
ودعِيand leave إمامَthe imam of السّالكينَthe wayfarers .. لربّهِto his Lord
ودعِي إمامَ السّالكينَ .. لربّهِ
Slay none but the lords of passion,
You destroy only lovers
And leave the imam of the wayfarers to his Lord.
Spare the imam of seekers of his Lord
