1. We journeyed with time some nights,
When it came to us in a new robe,

2. With fragrances and a little star
That caressed us from afar with wishes,

3. And melodies of longing that melted with yearning,
And a cup, a night, and days of celebration.

4. Time slept on our comfort
Innocently, innocently like a newborn babe.

5. Then it rose roaring, an audacious beast,
Raging at us with an iron heart.

6. It burned the scent of wishes in the robe
And cast winds upon us that destroy.

7. It said: I am time, I slumber briefly,
But my might is severe, severe.

8. I make mischief with people, light and shadow,
Hours of sadness and gentle breezes of love,

9. And grant them torturous wishes
In which they live the life of slaves.

10. I cast them into dismal darkness
And mock every stubborn dream.

11. Tomorrow in the dust they shall become silent
And the nights shall pass as I desire.

12. And I shall pass by every house singing
A song, while cups wander with illusion...anew.
