وصل الخيال ومنك رمت وصالا

هذي الزيارة لا تعد نوالا
The phantom came, though I sought union with you.
The imagination has arrived, and from you it has flung affection,
This visit does not count as a gift.
This visit will not count as attainment,
زارvisited الخيالthe phantom فلاso do not تزربيvisit me (probable intended reading) فيin الكرىsleep
زار الخيال فلا تزربي في الكرى
حاشاfar be it لحسنكfrom your beauty أنthat يكونit should be خيالاa phantom
حاشا لحسنك أن يكون خيالا
The phantom visited; do not [visit me] in sleep—
The imagination has visited, so do not be fooled in infatuation,
Far be it from your beauty to be a phantom.
Far be it from your beauty to be just imagination,
قدindeed كنتI had فيكabout you شككتdoubted ياO بدرfull moon الدجىof darkness
قد كنت فيك شككت يا بدر الدجى
حتىuntil رأيتكI saw you فيin اللثامthe veil هلالاa crescent moon
حتى رأيتك في اللثام هلالا
I had doubted you, O full moon of the darkness,
I used to doubt you, O full moon of the night,
Until I saw you in the veil—a crescent moon.
Until I saw you behind the veil as a crescent,
وهواكand love for you علمنيtaught me القريضverse فزادthus increased فيin
وهواك علمني القريض فزاد في
حبيكmy love for you أنيthat I منهfrom it أكسبI earn مالاmoney
حبيك أني منه أكسب مالا
And love for you taught me verse; what deepened
And composing poetry taught me more
My love for you was that I earn money from it.
To increase my love for you, that from it I earn wealth,
هوit منهضيwhat spurs me نحوtoward الاميرthe prince وهمةand high ambition
هو منهضي نحو الامير وهمة
حملتhave borne إليهtoward him صلاتهhis gifts آمالاhopes
حملت إليه صلاته آمالا
It spurs me toward the prince, as does high ambition;
It is my impetus toward the prince, an ambition
His gifts have borne hopes toward him.
That carried to him his prayers and hopes,
ووتيرةand the custom الشعراءof the poets فيin مدحpraise وفيand in
ووتيرة الشعراء في مدح وفي
منحgifts فتجمعthus it combines مفخراًa source of pride ونوالاand bounty
منح فتجمع مفخراً ونوالا
And the poets' way lies in praise and in
And the vigor of poets in praise and in
Gifts, thus joining glory and bounty.
Gift-giving, gathering pride and attainment,
ضربواthey fashioned لكfor you الأمثالsimiles فيin أشعارهمtheir poems
ضربوا لك الأمثال في أشعارهم
لكننيbut I بكusing you as the model أضربI fashion الأمثالاsimiles
لكنني بك أضرب الأمثالا
They fashioned similes for you in their poems;
They have given you proverbs in their poems
But I make you the model for my similes.
But I give you the proverbs with my poems
