    Dawn had mingled with the darkness, like the meeting

    Of a bay horse and a black one on a green meadow.

    I remember her when night was cupbearer, and our union

    Was wine, her mouth the cup—or her cup a mouth.

    Until we hastened with the stars, while their western sky

    Unstrung necklaces of pearls, and the east strung them.

    فلبوا وما فيهم سوى الليل محرم

    And I roused the young men of the morning draught to pleasure;

    They answered the call; only night among them was a consecrated pilgrim.

    And in each drinking companion’s cup, a remnant

    Gleams like a world covered by a dirham.
