A month apart from you, to glory’s chagrin,

is harder on me than the month of fasting.

And how can I visit you while the rain clouds weep

upon my house with pouring spring rains?

It was a dwelling with a cheerful face,

but has become a valley hard to reach,

and a sea, whose marvels include my escape

to you, thirsty, though the sea brims over.

My daughters are like frogs in its damp soil,

and my family, in the window openings, are like pigeons.

I cry out whenever clouds rise

and the lightning flashes make us weep with their smiles:

Let that fall around us, not upon us!

May God spare us your harm, O cloud!

The bowing walls within it have tumbled down

in prostration to the thunder, without an imam.

As though the guarded belongings I stored within it

lay at the doorways of wide-open tents.

No door can be shut, nor can any wall

keep the gaze from an inviolable face.

It was the Garden of Paradise; it has become

playgrounds for jinn and nesting places for owls.
