أحنّ إلى لقاء أبي عليٍّ

I yearn to meet Abu Ali,
I yearn to meet my father Ali
yet he refuses to yearn for my company.

وقدand already جليتhas been unveiled عليناbefore us الراحthe wine حتىuntil
وقد جليت علينا الراح حتى
مللناwe grew weary of جلوةthe unveiling of البيضthe fair-skinned العذاريvirgins
مللنا جلوة البيض العذاري
And wine has been unveiled before us until
The winds have unveiled themselves to us until
we have tired of the unveiling of fair-skinned virgins.
We grew weary of the whiteness of the chaste sands
وصفرand has yellowed أوجهthe faces of العذالthe reproachers يومa day
وصفر أوجه العذال يوم
وجوهthe faces of شموسهits suns تحكيmirror اصفراريmy pallor

إذا اصفرت عليه الشمس خلنا
نميرclear and sweet الماءthe water يمزجis mixed بالعقارwith wine

When the sun turns yellow upon it, we imagine

As though the water were a land of silver,
As if the water were land made of clay
overlaid with sheets of pure gold.
Covered in panels of dewiness
وأشجارand trees محملةladen with كؤوساًcups
وأشجار محملة كؤوساً
تضاحكlaugh together فيin احمرارredness واخضرارand greenness
تضاحك في احمرار واخضرار
And trees laden with cups
And trees laden with goblets
laugh together in red and green.
Laughing in redness and greenness
إذاwhen أبصرنthey behold فيin نهرٍa river سماءa sky
إذا أبصرن في نهرٍ سماء
وهبتthey bestow لهupon it نجومstars of الجلنارpomegranate blossom
وهبت له نجوم الجلنار
When they behold a sky in a river,
Whenever we see the sky in a river
they bestow on it stars of pomegranate blossom.
Bestowing upon it the stars of heaven
فزرناso visit us إنfor نارfire of الراحthe wine تكفيspares الthe
فزرنا إن نار الراح تكفي ال
نداميdrinking companions خيفتيthe two fears of عارshame ونارand fire
ندامي خيفتي عار ونار
So visit us: wine’s fire spares the
