I wore destitution until my hem became

as tight to move within as my collar.

And I struggled for my needs after adversity,

and fended off life's demands after hardship.

For I have burned my clothes-chest for fuel,

and water has been poured into the flour jar.

So is there among people—O people, help!—a noble man

to brighten the face of one afflicted and hard-pressed?

I want my brother when my throne is toppled

and I find myself in straits for my livelihood.

But when my circumstances improve a little,

    then everyone is my friend.
