منwho عاذريone who excuses me منagainst زمنٍan age ظالمunjust
من عاذري من زمنٍ ظالم
ليسis not بمستحيat all ashamed ولاnor راحمmerciful
ليس بمستحي ولا راحم
Who will vindicate me against an unjust age,
neither ashamed nor merciful?
تفعلُdo بالأحرارto the freeborn أحداثُهits calamities
تفعلُ بالأحرار أحداثُه
فِعلَthe action of الهوىpassion الدَّنفِthe lovesick one الهائمِthe love-bewildered wanderer
فِعلَ الهوى الدَّنفِ الهائمِ
Its calamities do to the freeborn
what passion does to the lovesick wanderer.
كأنماas though أصبحَhad begun يرميهمُit shoots at them
كأنما أصبحَ يرميهمُ
عنfrom جَفنِthe eyelid of مولايmy lord أبيAbu (father of) القاسمal-Qasim
عن جَفنِ مولاي أبي القاسم
As though it had begun to shoot at them
from the eyelid of my lord Abu al-Qasim.
