When your eyes look out toward one flank of a hill,
When your eyes gaze toward the side of a hill,
another reveals vistas from its heights.
Another reveals to you the flanks of its heights.

Its blossoms laugh with us, as though
Its blossoms laugh with us, as though
among the meadows we were wooing beloveds.
We were wooing beloveds from among them in the gardens.

The daisies smiled there, and I imagined them
The chrysanthemum smiled there, and I imagined it
welcoming you with delight, playfully teasing.
Greeting you, glad to see you and playfully teasing.

The rose loosened its veil and swayed, claiming,
And the rose's veil came undone; it swayed, claiming
by its visible signs, kinship with the roses of cheeks.
Kinship between its outward features and the roses of cheeks.
أقولُI say وماand there is nothing فيon الأرضِthe earth غيرُother than قرارةٍa hollow
تُصافحُshakes hands with رَوضاًmeadows حَولهاaround it متقارباًclose together
I say—though upon the earth there is only a hollow
I say, while on the earth there is only a hollow
embracing a meadow that draws close around it—
Shaking hands with meadows clustered close around it:

أباتت يَدُ الأستاذِ بين رياضها
تَدفَّقُpouring forth أمor أهدَتgave as a gift إليهاto it سَحَائباclouds
did the master’s hand spend the night amid its gardens,
Did the master's hand spend the night among its gardens,
pouring forth, or did it bestow clouds upon them?
Pouring forth, or did it bestow clouds upon it?

Did he clothe it in his radiant virtues, until
Did he clothe it in his radiant virtues, so that
its constellations revealed to us a single star?
Its stars came to unveil a star before us?

Or did the thoughts of his mind embroider its borders,
Did the musings of his mind embroider its fringes,
displaying exquisite floral wonders?
So it revealed marvels of exquisite flowers?

Did the zephyr stir its slender boughs as he would tremble
Did the east wind shake its branches as he sways
when, as a petitioner, your palm touched both his hands?
When your palm touches both his palms as you seek a favor?

I fancied him yearning toward it; so it adorned itself,
Did it imagine him longing for it, and so adorn itself,
hoping he would choose it for his pleasure-ground.
Hoping he would choose places within it for recreation?
