لولاwere it not for رجائيmy hope ثانياًagain للقائهto meet him
ماnot كنتُI was أَحياI live ساعةًan hour فيin نأيهِhis absence
Were it not for my hope of meeting him again,
Were it not for my hope of meeting him again,
I would not remain alive one hour in his absence.
I would not live an hour in his absence.
سَكَنٌa solace لهfor him أبداًforever فؤاديmy heart مسكنٌa dwelling
ماnot مَلَّgrew weary يوماًever فيهin it طولُthe length ثوائِهhis stay
A resting place for him forever—my heart is his dwelling;
He is a solace; my heart is forever his dwelling.
never once did the length of his stay there grow wearisome.
He has never tired of his long stay there.
غُصنٌa branch إذاwhen ماemphatic particle مادَswayed فيin ميدانهhis arena
أسدٌa lion إذاwhen ماemphatic particle هاجَraged فيin هيجائهِhis battle
A supple bough whenever he sways in his arena,
A branch when he sways in his arena,
a lion whenever he rages in battle.
A lion when he rages in his battle.
فيin جفنthe eyelid ناظرِهhis eye وجَفنand the sheath حُسامِهhis sword
سيفانtwo swords مختلفانdiffering فيin أنحائهِhis directions
Within the eyelid of his eye and the sheath of his saber
In the lid of his eye and the sheath of his sword
are two swords, unlike in where they turn:
Are two swords, aimed in different directions:
فبواحدٍso with one يسطوhe attacks علىagainst أحبابهِhis lovers
وبواحدٍand with one يسطوhe attacks علىagainst أعدائِهhis enemies
with one he assails those who love him,
So with one he strikes at his lovers,
and with the other he assails his enemies.
And with the other he strikes at his enemies.
قَمَرٌa moon غداbecame رُوحيmy soul وراحَand departed مُفارقيparting from me
والجسمُand the body بالروحthrough the soul امتساكُsustaining بقائِهits continued existence
A moon who became my soul, then went away, parting from me—
A moon who became my soul, then departed from me,
yet the body's continued existence is sustained by the soul.
And the body's continued life is sustained by the soul.
فَتعَجُّبيso my wonder أنthat عِشتُI lived بعدafter فِراقِهparting from him
وتَحَسُّريand my grief إنif مُتُّI died قبلbefore لقائِهmeeting him
My wonder is that I lived after parting from him,
So I marvel that I lived after parting from him,
and my sorrow, if I die before meeting him.
And would grieve if I died before meeting him.
لوif لمdid not أَرِدI want بَصَريmy sight لرؤيةto see وَجههِhis face
ماnot كنتُI was ذاpossessed of حِرصٍeagerness علىfor استبقائهِpreserving it
Had I not desired my sight in order to behold his face,
If I did not want my sight to behold his face,
I would have had no eagerness to preserve it.
I would not be eager to preserve it.
