سقىmay water جَانبيboth sides of بغدادَBaghdad أخلافُthe teats of مُزنَةٍa raincloud
تُحاكيmirror دُموعيmy tears صَوبَهاits downpour وانحِدارهاand its descent
May a raincloud's teats water both sides of Baghdad;
My tears mirror its downpour and its descent.
فليfor I have فيهماin both of them قَلبٌa heart شجانيhas grieved me اشتياقُهُlonging for it
ومهجةُand the lifeblood نفسٍof a soul ماnot أَمَلُّI tire of ادَّكارَهَاremembering her
For in them I have a heart, longing for which has grieved me,
And a soul's lifeblood I never tire of remembering.
سأغفرُI shall forgive للأيامِto the days كلَّevery عظيمةٍgrievous wrong
لئنif indeed قَرَّبتthey bring near بعدafter الِبعادseparation مَزَارَهاa visit to her
I shall forgive the days every grievous wrong
If, after separation, they bring a visit to her within reach.
