إذاif انحازَwithdrew عنكfrom you الغوثُaid واحتفلَand gathered in force العداthe enemies
إذا انحازَ عنك الغوثُ واحتفلَ العدا
عليكagainst you فَصَرِّحthen proclaim openly باسمِهِwith his name الفردthe peerless واغلبِand prevail
عليك فَصَرِّح باسمِهِ الفرد واغلبِ
If aid withdraws from you and your enemies gather
against you, proclaim his peerless name and prevail.
فلوfor if طُبعتwere stamped بيضُgleaming السيوفِthe swords علىupon اسمهhis name
فلو طُبعت بيضُ السيوفِ على اسمه
مَضتcut through وهيwhile they فيin الأغمادthe sheaths فيat كلِّevery مَضربِtarget
مَضت وهي في الأغماد في كلِّ مَضربِ
For if gleaming swords were stamped with his name,
they would cut through every target while still in their sheaths.
وماand not خَلَعتcast off; bestowed robes of honor للمرءِfor the man مَسعاهُhis striving والدٍa father
وما خَلَعت للمرءِ مَسعاهُ والدٍ
إذاif لمnot تقابلهyou match him بحالٍin a condition مُهذَّبِrefined
إذا لم تقابله بحالٍ مُهذَّبِ
Nor does a father’s striving clothe a man in honor [wording unclear],
if you do not match him in refined character.
