وأرىand I deem المديحَpraise إذاwhen عداكit passes you by نقيصةًa failing
وأرى المديحَ إذا عداك نقيصةً
فأعافُهُso I shun it ولوeven if أنهit is فيconcerning حَاتمِHatim
فأعافُهُ ولو أنه في حَاتمِ
I regard praise, when it passes you by, as a defect;
And I deem praise a failing when it passes you by;
so I disdain it, even if it were for Hatim.
so I shun it, even if it is in praise of Hatim.
فإذاand when امتَدحتُI praise سواكَsomeone other than you قالsays الشِّعرpoetry ليto me
فإذا امتَدحتُ سواكَ قال الشِّعر لي
لمdid not تَرعَyou honor حقّيmy right إذfor أَبَحتَyou made permissible مَحَارميmy sanctities
لم تَرعَ حقّي إذ أَبَحتَ مَحَارمي
Whenever I praise another, my conscience says to me:
And when I praise someone other than you, poetry says to me:
“You failed to honor my claim when you made my sacred bounds fair game.”
"You have not honored my right, for you have profaned my sanctities."
