لكfor you اللهGod إنيindeed I ماas long as بعدتyou are far away مُسَهَّدُsleepless
وإنيand indeed I مسلوبُrobbed of العَزاءِsolace مُكَدَّدُworn down
God be with you—I, while far away, lie sleepless,
God be with you: while you are far away, I am sleepless,
bereft of solace and worn down.
and I am robbed of solace, worn down.
وإنِّيand indeed I إذاwhen نَادَيتُI called upon صَبرِيmy patience أجابنيanswered me
سوابقُrushing drops منof دَمعِيmy tears تجورُswerve وتُقصِدُand strike home
Whenever I call upon my patience, I am answered
And when I call upon my patience, I am answered
by swift tears of mine, some straying, some coursing straight.
by rushing tears of mine that swerve and strike home.
تصعدهraise it الأنفاسُthe breaths منfrom كِبديmy liver دماًas blood
وتحدِرُهand lower it الأجفانthe eyelids وهوwhile it is مورَّدُrose-red
My sighs raise them as blood from my liver,
Breaths draw them up from my liver as blood,
and my eyelids send them down, rose-red.
and the eyelids let them fall, rose-red.
فَديتكِmay I be your ransom ماnot شوقيmy longing كشوقlike a longing عرفتُهI have known it
ولاnor ذاthis الهوىlove منof جنسkind ماwhat كنتI used to أعهدُknow
I would ransom you! My longing is unlike any longing I have known,
May I be your ransom! My longing is unlike any I have known,
nor is this passion of a kind I ever knew before.
nor is this love of the kind I once knew.
كأنَّas though اهتزازَquivering الرُّمحthe spear فيin كبديmy liver إذاwhenever
تكشَّفَrevealed itself بَرقlightning أوor بداappeared منكof yours مَعهدُa familiar haunt
It is as though a spear quivers in my liver whenever
It is as though a spear quivers in my liver whenever
lightning flashes, or some haunt of yours appears.
lightning flashes, or a haunt of yours appears.
أُحِّملُI entrust أنفاسَbreaths الشمالِthe north wind رسائليmy messages
وليand I have زَفَراتٌsighs بينهاamong them تترددreverberate
I entrust my messages to the breaths of the north wind,
I entrust my messages to the breaths of the north wind,
and sighs of mine move restlessly among them.
and sighs of mine echo among them.
فإنso if هَبَّblew فيin حيِّan encampment سَمومa scorching wind فإنهاthen it is
بقيةُthe remnant أنفاسيmy breaths بهاwith them تتوقَّدُit blazes
If a scorching simoom should blow through a quarter,
So if a scorching wind blows through an encampment, it is
it is the remnant of my breaths, blazing there.
the remnant of my breaths, with which it blazes.
ولوand if كنتُI was أَدريI know ماwhat أُقاسيI endure منfrom الهَوىlove
لماwould not حَكَمَتruled للبينِin parting's favor فيin وَصلِناour union يَدُa hand
Had I known what love would make me endure,
And had I known what I would endure through love,
no hand would have ruled for parting against our union.
no hand would have ruled in parting's favor over our union.
فلاso no يُنِكرdeny التَّخلِيدَeternal confinement فيin النارthe Fire عاقلٌa rational person
فهاfor behold أناI فيin نارِthe fire الغرامِpassion مُخَلِّدُabiding forever

Let no rational man deny eternity in the Fire:
So no rational person denies being kept forever in the Fire:
here I am, immortal in passion’s fire.
for here I am, abiding forever in the fire of passion.
