منfrom أينwhere للعارِضِfor the raincloud السَّاريtraveling by night تلهُّبُهits blazing
وكيفَand how طَبَّقcovered وَجهَthe face of الأَرضِthe earth صَيِّبُهits downpour
Whence comes the blaze of the night-traveling cloud?
And how has its downpour covered the face of the earth?
هلhas it? استعانَsought help from جُفُونيmy eyelids فهيَso they تُنجِدُهُaid it
أمor استعارَborrowed فُؤاديmy heart فهوso it يُلهبُهُsets it aflame
Has it sought my eyelids’ help, so they come to its aid?
Or has it borrowed my heart, which sets it aflame?
بجانبbeside الكرخal-Karkh منin بغدادَBaghdad ليfor me سَكَنٌa source of solace
لولاwere it not for التَجَمُّلُcomposure ماnot أَنفَكُّI cease أَندبُهُI lament him
By al-Karkh in Baghdad is one who gives me solace;
were it not for composure, I would never cease lamenting him.
وصاحبٍand a friend ماnot صَحِبتُI kept company with الصَّبرَpatience مذsince بَعُدتgrew distant
ديارُهُhis dwellings وأرِانيand I see myself لستُI am not أَصحبُهُkeeping it company
And a friend—I have not kept patience company since distant grew
his dwellings; and I find I do not keep patience company.
فيin كلevery يومٍday لعَينيfor my eye ماsomething that يؤرِّقُهاkeeps it sleepless
منfrom ذِكرِهremembering him ولقلَبيand for my heart ماsomething that يُعَذِّبُهtorments it
Every day, something keeps my eye sleepless
from remembering him, and something torments my heart.
ماnot زالceased يُبِعدُنيhe drives me away عنهfrom him وأُتبِعُهُand I follow him
ويستمرُّand he persists علىin ظُلميwronging me وأعتبُهُand I appease him
He kept driving me away from him, while I followed him,
and persisted in wronging me, while I appeased him,
حتىuntil لَوَتturned ليin my favor النوىseparation منbecause of طولِthe length of جَفوِتهِhis coldness
وَسَهَّلتand made easy ليfor me سبيلاًa path كنتI used to أَرهبُهُdread it
until separation turned in my favor through his long coldness,
and made easy for me a path I had dreaded.
وماand not البعادُdistance دَهَانيafflicted me بلbut خَلائقُهhis traits
ولاand not الفراقُparting شَجانيgrieved me بلbut تجنُّبهُhis avoidance
And it was not distance that afflicted me, but his ways,
nor parting that grieved me, but his shunning me.
لوif أنthat قلبيmy heart علىdespite ماwhat فيهis within it منof جَزَعٍanguish
يَومَon the day of النَّوَىseparation بيديin my hand ماnot ضاقnarrowed مهرَبُهits way of escape
Had my heart, despite the anguish within it,
been in my hand on the day of separation, its way of escape would not have narrowed.
إذاًthen لَجُدتُI would have been generous بهwith it طوعاًwillingly بينهمamong them
كيso that لاnot أكونI would be برغميagainst my will حينwhen أَسلبهُI am robbed of it
Then I would willingly have given it away among them,
so I would not be unwilling when robbed of it.
ماnot فائتa lost thing بذَلَتهُgave it up النَّفسُthe soul طائعةًwillingly
كماlike what تُمانعit fights عنهfor it ثمthen تُغلبُهis deprived of it
A lost thing willingly yielded by the soul is not
like one it fights to keep, then is robbed of.
